EGR Cooler removal
I have removed both EGR and coolers from my 08 EU4 Discovery.
At the moment i have just joined the pipes together to form a bypass.
How do i get rid of the cooler pipes altogether.
I'm sure some people have already done this, any help appreciated.
It makes the engine bay less cluttered - ok only a bit less cluttered, but in the D3 every little helps.

i had done it to mine (some time back). if you remove the cooler you are removing also the thermostats that are on the cooler. as a result my engine was running always cooler, it could never reach in the middle. so i don't really now how good or bad is that and i placed them back. i thing that in joining the pipes you need to allow for a fitting to accommodate that thermostat so you will run the engine to the right temperature.

I have been running the discovery without the EGR coolers for a couple of years without any problems and as there is nothing to see - EGR's or their cooler pipes - the MOT is not a problem.
I too initially had the overcooling effect as i also found out that both EGR coolers had mini thermostats (documented elsewhere on this forum - see cooling circuits), so instead of bypassing the EGR cooler hoses, i checked to see where they were routed from/to and made the decision the cap the two pipes to each cooler at a suitable point.
The engine gets to temperature quickly and stays at the right temperature always as was normal.
The mini EGR coolers are EU4 engines only i am led to believe, and if your D3 is overcooling then these may be the problem if you have already changed the main thermostat.
I removed the EGR coolers when i reconditioned the engine (spun bearings) as i didn't want EGR problems or another problem that occurs of the EGR coolers leaking internally and a difficult problem to diagnose as there were no external leaks!
Another advantage is the increased workspace around the engine with the EGR's and coolers removed.

Mine is an EU4 too. So you have plugged the T at the bottom hoses. EGR coolant pipes start and terminate there?
If I may ask how have you plugged the exhaust at that point? Weld metal piece on them?

Yes, plugged the flow and return at the metal junction pipe for the cooler hoses.
I completely removed the metal pipe that runs over the rear of the engine as well.
For the exhaust manifold i used a blanking plate as used for EGR blanking, i cannot remember if i fabricated one or modified an existing blanking plate.

for manifold blanking you require and larger blanking plate.
I find that :
1. The exhaust helps heat up the coolant to normal temperature
2. On early engines, if you blank the cooler pipes at the front of the engine, water has no where to circulate, and therefore I worry the engine temp. sensor will not give a valid reading.
I think the sensor is moved on the later engines

that's why am saying that if you do blank the water pipes you need to remove completely the coolers and plug the exhaust getting in the cooler. so the question is how you blank those exhausts?

It’s just a bit of metal with 2 holes in.
You will have to make them yourself
