Egr failure - could it be morrison's fuel?

Just thought I would pass on events of the weekend and see what everyones opinions/experiences might be.

Went up to scotland this week/weekend, left swindon on thursday afternoon after filling up at our usual local sainsburys. Stayed overnight at the lake district after picking a vehicle up to take in the trailer from Rugby, Warwickshire.

Next morning, topped up the now quarter full tank with Esso diesel, went into Edinburgh, then over to Glasgow.

After loading the return car, popped in to a Morrisons in Glasgow to fill up the now quarter full tank. Arrived on the forecourt saw only one pump working with diesel fuel, filled up and headed back towards the Lake district.

30 or so miles on, after enduring a delay of an hour in almost stationary traffic on the M8 east (friday) due to an accident, noticed reduced throttle response but still able to get him up to speed by keeping my foot flat on the ground until around 35 mph when the turbo would kick in and whooosh, off we would go.

On my next 150 plus miles the vehicle kept loosing speed between 50-55mph, but by keeping my flat at a constant, managed to maintain the 60-63mph without any issues, no warning lights, no clouds of smoke out of the rear, infact put it down to the ever increasing winds/cross winds assuming I was driving "into" the wind.

Got to the Lake district but on motorway slip roads, when coming to a halt, then pulling away realised all was not well as it took an awful long amount of time to get up to 35 mph.

After sleeping on it, thought it must be the fuel from Morrisons being "dirty", so continued south but rang a friend to put him on notice for the Sunday that we needed to flush out the fuel system.

Also filled up from the same Esso station, same pump, when leaving the lake district and hoped the new fuel would do the job for me as we headed south, alas not!

Met at Colchester by LR Assist, "Dan the Man" who plugged me in and diagnosed a Egr failure, got recovered to Swindon (empty trailer and all).

"Dan the man" also mentioned that it was unusual to have a egr failure and was more than concerned about the story we had told him for the past few days. He went on to explain that one should be very careful about supermarket forecourts as it would appears that some have diesel that has been diluted with up to 15% ethonol, which disco's can only put up with around 5% dilution. A practise adopted by quite a few supermarkets as it means the raw product goes further and thus increases profit.

So my question is this, has anyone had a similar failure of the ERG and under what circumstances, was the events similar to mine ie supermarket fill up, or is it just one of those unfortunate co-incidences Big Cry

Do a search for EGR failures. Had two sets in my first D3. + 7 weeks in FFRR as they were on back-order.

I have a company Shell fuel card, so can 100% say that it wasn't Supermarket fuel that caused mine. Dan the Man obviously hasn't worked for LR assist for long, (or he is being very pc about failures Whistle ) or maybe he was just the local on call guy over the weekend. Was he in a Disco3 ?

Haven't looked at your cars age. hopefully not too painful as covered by warranty

Thumbs Up

"dan the man" 4 years local D3 tech in his 57 plate 7 seater with red stripes, showed me the computer fault, seems the car sent a fault message but didnt go off on the dash!!!

Whilst waiting for recovery, programmed me key fob to raise and lower the car when hitching him up to the trailer.

So at the moment its seems more of a co-incidence Embarassed

warranty finished 8th nov 08....... Whistle

Dan's less experienced mate, who recovered mine. Lowered my car once it was all strapped down on the recovery truck, then ground the towbar into the dealers carpark when he reversed it off - thanks pal Laughing

Once out of warranty get them blanked off - then you don't need to worry about it happening again. The EGR design seems flawed on the D3, and I don't think the replacement EGRs are any better than the originals.

comforting to know Big Cry

Given our original post, we are now in posession of a brand new boxed fuel filter, can this be changed without draining down the whole system?
