Just been having issues with the D3's EGR's that were replaced at 45,000 mile - car has now done 80,000 miles and they have started playing up again. Still have the old set, so decided to clean them up and see if they would work again. Used Wyns EGR cleaning spray (Halfords) and my trusty Dremel tool. They have cleaned up really well.
Took the solenoids off both valves to check for free movement of the valve and solenoid actuator - no problems.
The only issue is that one of the o-ring seals on one of the solenoid is way over size. It is red in appearance but I am not sure what material it is made of. There is also a green o-ring on each solenoid but they are in good condition.
The question is does anyone know what material the o-rings are likely to be made from?
Any help would be appreciated Mike

Thanks for your input, but not as simple as just blanking them off on a 2008 Euro IV model, also requires software patch and anyway if I can obtain the correct seal then I will have a fully serviceable pair of valves for a couple of £'s. Mike

a couple of quid and be short of quite a bit of skin on your knuckles and still be recirculating crud through your engine and still have the worry of the valves failing and knowing they will fail in less than another 40K.
Having the v/vs blanked also makes a noticeable difference when the car pulls off
But at the end of the day......your call There is no I in team, but there are five in Individual Brilliance

How does one go about blanking them ?
And what exactly does the EGR do ?
It’s obviously not crucial to the running of the engine if the can be blanked .

Red “O” rings in my experience have always been made of Silicone, rather than nitriles or rubber composites. Can’t help you with sourcing them though.

Sorry I don't have any images for the EGR's. The Haynes Workshop manual for the D3 has the full removal procedure for them. Once out they are very easy to strip down and clean.
