Electric power consumption when engine is not running

Does anyone know how much power the D3 is using in the following circumstances:

1. When the car is parked up?

2. When the D3 is alive and key is turned to position 1?

3. same but then key in position 2?

Looks like the 5 Amps battery charger I borrowed can not keep the battery charged when key in position 2.

I've not measured it but my guess would be:

1. perhaps 5-20 mA (alarm, motion sensors etc) - 40 days would take about 10Ah from the battery

2. perhaps 1-3 A (radio, interior lights etc)

3. perhaps 5-15 A (above plus ignition/injection, glow plugs 40A? for short period, dash lights etc)

Carl,

I think 1 would be more as it wakes up every several hours and self levels. The question is how often and how long it will be awake for. and does it make a difference if you put it in Off-road height or in acces height?
Will it still wake up if it is on it's bump stops?

2 & 3 I will measure when I found a fuse for my multimeter as I have blown that one years ago and didn't bother replacing it. But now I think I need it because I want to know the power consumption.

Roel,
I couldn't tell you the power consumption but my car has been parked up in an airport car park for 2 weeks out of every 5 for the past year while I am offshore and it's never looked low on power or failed to start yet. Although now that I have mentioned the subject it probably won't start after my next trip. Whistle Whistle

I am lucky, I am mostly doing land jobs and I take my D3 with me most off the time. Till now only 1 time I left my D3 at home for 20 days in December and that was no problem and that battery was changed in January as found not to be very good anymore. So yes I think it should be possible to park the D3 for longer than 2 weeks. I even think a month should be possible.
But my battery was completely empty after 10 days on a holiday and I don't have a real idea what was left on so I might do some checking to find out if I have a problem or if I left something on.

Roel,
My guestimate is based upon working backwards. I expect the battery capacity is around 100Ah and I would also expect if it was say 40-50% discharged it would struggle to turn a cold engine over - it would be slow at least. I'm sure I've left mine standing for over 3 weeks on occasions and not noticed any difference in how it turns over when I started it.

If it was drawing an average of 100mA when switched off, that would be 2.4Ah per day which would be 50Ah over 3 weeks which, as above, I would expect to notice when trying to start it - my conclusion therefore is that it must be drawing much less than 100mA when switched off - hence my 5-20mA guess.

Just noticed you've been locked out after 10-days with a dead battery - even a singe 5W bulb (glove box or similar) a radar detector or phone charger? could do this by drawing 500mA - 12Ah per day so a completely dead battery in around 8-9 days.

Will be interested if you ever get to measure the various values though.

I did a test today.

sleeping or close to that 0.7 Amps
Door open internal lights on but no Nav radio etc 3.5 Amps
Vehicle awake Nav and Radio on 7 Amps
Key in pos 0 and awaked 8 Amps
Key in pos 1 10 Amps
Key in pos 2 20-25 Amps depending what you have on.

Key in pos 2 is a lot. 25 Amps.

I think I read somewhere in this forum that the D3 draws around 20 Amps with only the Key inserted. No turning, no ignition or something. That´s because the car "wakes up" when the key is inserted and powers up all computers and components.
There have been cases where someone left the Key inserted for some hours working around the car and meanwhile just wanted to listen to the car´s radio. After some hours the battery was flat Shocked
I think that´s why the radio works also with no key in.
