Electronic Parking Brake Fault - Fix

I had been experiencing an Electronic Parking Brake Fault, I thought I would document my experience, in case it would help anyone. My EPB not longer displaying a fault - it's fixed!

1. The EPB was recording a fault C1A53-68. Electronic Parking Brake Latching Failure, Emergency Release Has Been Activated. Parking Brake light on.

2. Mechanic looked at it and determined that it was probably the module. I imagined having to remove the module, changing the cables out, rusty bolts, replacing stripped gears etc. etc.... At that point I decided to work on it myself.

3. Activating the parking brake, I could hear the cable moving in and out, so I was hopeful that the actual EPB module was not at fault.

4. I removed the right wheel and rotor. Sure enjoy, the parking brake had detached from the parking brake shoe lever. The parking brake shoe lever was seized solid. The wedge adjuster was also frozen up. Everything was a rusty mess. Here is a link to a video I made of the actuator moving in and out.

5. I rebuilt the parking brake on both sides. New rotor, shoes, hardware, and new brake pads. Rust reformer on the brake shield. Lubricated all the right spots.

6. Then I adjusted the parking shoes and wedge.

6. Fixed! After I completely serviced the parking brake mechanism it worked smoothly. I didn't touch the EPB at all.

Well done for getting to the bottom of it, great pics Thumbs Up Only thing I'd say is - regular inspection/maintenance would have gone a long way in preventing this - just saying Wink

Absolutely right. Totally could have been avoided with regular maintenance.
