Embarrassing question about brake pads... |
|
Ok... daft question:
Just looked at the visual healthcheck sheet that Duckworths kindly did for me last time my D3 was in (last week) - hadn't read it until now...
It has a note on it that the front pads are down to 5mm, and "will probably need changing at the next service" - (that's in 4K miles).
I'm going away tomorrow for ten days tomorrow and will be towing a heavy rib up and down some hills (braked trailer and I'm not heavy on the brakes generally). I'll do about 1K miles, and will tow the rib for about half of this.
Question is, how much is 5mm (cue p*** takes )? Not sure if that's a lot, or not much...
Should I:
i. not worry about it - it's plenty to get me through until end of next week.
ii. get them changed asap - 5mm is not very much at all...
Thanks very much!

I wouldn't believe too much what the dealers guess as to how much is left .
My last service the dealers said the pads were 40 % worn . Only been on for 15000 miles ..last set i got 51000 out of them G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

If the wear sensor is now showing activation in the display, it will only dissappear once the pads have been changed and a NEW wear sensor installed, you can either do it yourself (pads & sensor) as it is very easy or take it to your local LR dealer or specialist I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. The warning also goes away as long as you keep on your brakes.
If the sensor wears down the a small wire wears away. So when you push the sensor against the disk the contact is made again. So everytime you release the brake you get the bong with the brake pad message. Roel

hi.
ive just bought a disco 3 . took it to farnell landrover for a service and they said i had a 1000 miles left on rear pads. i bought a set of rear pads off ebay for 35 quid and took me an hour to fit . the pads i took off had about 6mm left on ..the brand new ones had 13mm on so i reckon they were still good for a few thousand not the one thou they said . anyway new pads are in and working fine . Approx 20K miles.
Intermittent whistle from rear left. Stopped when brakes applied.
Garage (independent) found pads worn down to metal, disc cut but not so bad as to be changed.

And only at the inner pad not at both. A check with your eye and a mirror could prevent this. Roel

What's the recommended pad thickness before changing? I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

The sensor wears through at about 3 to 4 mm.
You could go lower but I would check them regulary. If you do a lot off long distance driving, pads hardly wear. If you go off-road you could easily loose 1 mm in a day.
But then pads aren't that expensive so I would change them early. Roel
