engine failed

hi don't know if this is the right place to post this so hear goes i have just had the dreaded broken crank Big Cry today hoping i can get away with just replacing the crank i drove it for probably 3 miles or less on as low reves as possible to get it home I've been looking at a crank kit on apex auto parts its a forged crank would this be ok and i know i need to use plastigauge but what are the acceptable tolerances if anyone can help it would be most appreciated one moor thing are the 2.7 cranks the same as the 3.0 crank because i can get a 2.7 one for free

no I've got a 2012 d4 3.0 i was hoping the 2.7 crank was the same because i know someone with a new 2.7 crank i can have for free

And you should of course inspect the block for cracks and measure it properly before buying a new crank. When the crank breaks it puts a lot of lateral stress on the block and caps. There could also be spun bearings which could render the block scrap.

the nocking wasn't that bad until about a mile away from home so fingers crossed its fine how do i measure the block

Yes, fingers crossed.

To have the best chances of a successful engine repair, you have two options, either leave the work to a reliable specialist company that have the knowledge and tools to to the job correctly. OR prepare to learn the work yourself and purchase the needed tools (unless you already have it of course)
Viewing the LR TIME engine rebuilds on youtube should give you an idea of the work involved and the steps to perform. They provide entertainment, not streaming workshop manuals but still it's a good starting point.

thanks mate I've been watching there youtube channel since owning a discovery Christian is verry knowledgeable the problem is he explains everything like you should know what he is going on about Laughing I'm sure ill figure it out I've rebuilt a few engines over the years just hoped i wouldn't have to do one of these but i suppose owning a discovery you will have to do it at some point Rolling with laughter

made a start on the engine removal today only managed to get front end off the radiators and cowling was a nightmare I'm taking the engine out with body on done a range rover sport before so hopefully same thing

As the stroke increased from 88mm to 90mm it seems unlikely. Seems like sale listings make a difference between them as well.

Cranks are different - you need a 2.7 crank.
 Series one 1949 - in bits, chassis is strapped to the ceiling in my garage (beside the canoe)
LR 90 - In bits
Disco 3 - currently in bits

decided not to fix the crank wright now so brought a 3.0 jag engine ant the moment i would rather take one out and put one in for now but if the other engine can be fixed ill keep it as a spare you never know when it will go again. the engine i have brought has only done 90k my old engine has done 175k so hopefully the jag engine will last just as long Wink

can anyone recommend any ware to get good turbo cartridges for the 3.0 I'm debating weather or not to change the turbos while the engine is out.

morning everyone i need some help or advice i have fitted my replacement engine and all up and running the problem I'm having is the engine is out of a jag so had to swap every thing from my engine which wasn't a problem the problem is the turbo oil return pipes on the jag go into the block and discovery ones go into the sump i used the right side return pipe from the jag and the left one from the discovery now here's the problem i forgot to put the blanking plug in the block on the left side and the aluminium engine mount is in the way can the engine mount be removed without having to strip it all out again i just need to get the plug in and its ready to go
