engin fault message

can anyone help my engine fault comes on when i push hard eg above 3000 rpm fautl sometimes clears.dealer says it is egr valve he would cause he wants 262 a peace to replace.any sencible thaughts. ps a lot worse when towin 3 axel ifor williams hence 3000 rpm
