Engine keeps going for 2-3sec after releasing throttle
Hello,
This week i noticed that the throttle respons on my 2008 disco 3 2.7tdv6 is a bit weird. It's best noticed when driving slow (in traffic or just leaving the drive way) When i release the pedal the engine keeps going at around 1500rpm for 2-3seconds. Sometimes it's tricky, because the car wants to keep going forward and you really have to brake 'against' the engine.
Today when driving in traffic (accelerating, stop, accelerating, stop and so on, with constantly this delay in throttle release) the car fell into limp mode twice just showing the message "engine system fault" and even "transmission system fault". No check engine light, just the message and limp mode.
Stop the car, restart it and it was ok again (except for the 'sticky throttle')
Anyone had this problem before?
Could this be an EGR related problem?

More likely throttle body not shutting properly due to gunk.

Check joints and components from air filter to throttle body, sound like it’s taking in unregistered airMetal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)
LR door puddle projectors (10 mins)
Tinted Bonnet wind deflector (10 mins)
All Intercooler pipes and Tbolts (2hrs)
3 injectors replaced so far (30mins)
Sunroof drain pipes both sides 2.5 hrs)
Rear discs, shoes,pads,callipers,flexi hoses, rigid brake line, n/s upper hub carrier bush and rear n/s upper arm (13hrs over 2 days)

Thank you for the replies.
I visually checked the inlet system from airfilter all the way to the throttle body. Didn’t find anything. I did not open it up to see the inside of the throttle body because the car is going in for service next week anyway. I’ll have it checked and will report the cause and solution.

Diesel or V8? If it’s diesel the engine speed is governed electronically via the fuelling. There is no throttle as such. Could be a faulty accelerator pedal.

So i brought the car in for service this morning.
Just before i got there the car went into limp mode again and the mechanic hooked up the computer right away.
Only one real fault code which had something to do with the DPF. Message was something like "DPF pressure differential to high bank 1"
This time restarting didn't delete the fault, so guess i was there just in time. The mechanic said he would first try to regenerate the DPF and check it for leaks or faulty sensors. As the car wil be in for two days (timing belt and oilpump, full service, gearbox flush, diffs an tc oil change etc.) i will be back in a few days if the problem is solved.

Mine is the same. Only notice it in first gear moving slowly. Keeps going for a few seconds after taking foot off throttle. I have no error messages or dpf. Egrs blanked. It feels like it’s holding on to change into second gear before it cuts off throttle. Interested to see if you find out anything.

So, the car is finally back from the specialist
They had holiday closings for two weeks and the car had some weird faults the day they were finished and test driving it.
They thought it was a dirty\faulty airpressure sensor in the throttle body. But guess what? A full service en cleaning the inlet/sensor didn't do the trick. The problem is still there. No limp mode yet, but i didn't drive in traffic yet so we'll experience soon i guess.
I really want this problem gone, so will keep trying to figure it out.

Could a dirty MAP sensor ever cause this ??
ref Gareth mentioning the accelerator position sensors would it be worth looking on the gaps iid live data and watching there position, don’t know if it would work with just the ign on and pressing the pedal on and off
Does it still do it in sport mode

Hi,
I found several other treats with same problems where the oil temp sensor was the cause. Will deffinetely go back to let them check all live data.
If the pedal would be the problem i guess it would be the same problem all the time and it would not give any limp mode or other system faults, because then the system simply thinks i’m applying a bit of throttle?

On mine it only happens in gear. It doesn’t go into limp mode. Once it’s in gear in any D R S +/- modes and you reach 1500rpm it will keep going for a few seconds. In neutral the engine responds normally.

My is similar to Irwin's. In first and maybe second on low RPMs after you let go of the throttle it keeps revs for 2-3 seconds

So, brought the car in to the shop again yesterday after it fell into limp mode again. We took a look at some live data and the egr valves seem to not close fast enough after releasing the pedal. They stay at 42% for a few seconds before dropping down to 5%. They are now trying an egr and inlet cleaning process with some kind of MotoVac cleaning machine. Lets hope this will solve the problem. But as Irwin’s car has the same problems with blanked egr’s I’m a bit worried that it will not be over yet....

ok, small update.
They changed a speed sensor on the transfer case. problem was gone for about a day, or basically just on long drive home. next day problem was back, not all the time, but after a week its even worse than it was before. now it even sticks to 2000rpm in 2nd gear, which is kinda dangerous sometimes.
will bring the car in again to have it tested and readout some live data. I want this problem gone!

Reopening this thread to see if it was resolved.
I had a new torque converter fitted a while back and it has started doing this along with a slight noise accompanying the delayed throttle release.
I think it has to be related to the torque converter so bringing it up here to see if it helps.
