For the UK that 5-30 or 10-30 are fine, unless you think that global warming is going to put us below -20C.

couldn't find 5/30 either and dealer gave me 5/40 to use as top up.

First Part is for Winter Rating of Engine Oil:
Low temperature rating temperature at which oil is usable
25w -5°C
20w -10°C
15w -15°C
10w -20°C
5w -25°C
0w -30°C and below
Second Part is for SAE Kinematic Viscosity of Engine Oil
Viscosity @ 100°C cSt SAE Rating
16.3 - 21.9 50
12.5 - 16.3 40
9.3 - 12.5 30
5.6 - 9.3 20
less than 5.6 10 Jim

In Rural Scotland 0W-30 or 5W-30 would be more like it.
The other winter measured -23º at around 11.00 p.m.

Not sure what effect the higher viscosity rating has on the engine.
I would most likely look to use 5W-30 or 0W-30 and possibly 10W-30 (if -20º is fine in your area) as this keeps the viscosity rating the same as reccommended by Land Rover. The only thing you are changing is the minimum temperature that the oil will work at. Jim

Also as LR state 5W-30 if you go with 0W-30 you are only being more cautious by going for an oil that works at -30º or below rather than -25º Jim

Winger is correct and don't forget these oils are fully synthetic so are far more durable than traditional oils.

Thanks for clearing up the codes on the oils. searched motor factors high and low and eventually found what I thought was 5w/30. After I had topped up discovered it was 0w/30, much happier now. Oil cost €53 for 4 litres. At that price no wonder the Disco runs low. Better that though than a new engine!!!!
