Hi Lucy,

Mine has now done 11.5K and it burns around half a litre every 1000 miles........apparently this is the norm

Lucy, all TDv6 engines appear to use a couple of litres of oil bewteen 1k and 10k miles then oil useage seems to stop. One theory put to me by an instructor at Land Rover Experience was that the engine block on the TDv6 is porous and it absorbs oil as it runs in. Once the block is saturated with oil this useage stops. So the oil isn't being burnt or leaking out. Confess I find that explanation rather weird, but as long as the engine still performs sweetly, I cannot get worried by it....

Hi Lucy, Welcome to DISCO3. Where abouts in Surrey are you?

As has been said above the TDV6 does use a fair bit to start with, mine did until about 6000 miles but I haven't had to top it up since. I had an oil and filter change at 7500 miles too which made the engine run a lot smoother

My dealer warned me that it may use up to a litre of oil in the first 1k but I keep checking and even after 1.2k the level on the dipstick doesn't appear to have moved from the day I picked it up - I am checking the oil in the normal way - (level surface - not fired up for 12 hrs - extract dipstick - wipe - insert - leave a few seconds - extract - check) Apart from the oil getting slightly darker each time - the oil is still up to the fourth nodule. Am I missing something - or is my disco blessed by the Lord??? Bow down

I find the dipstick on the TDV6 the most unreassuringly one to read that I have ever known. And I have 46 years of private and professional experience of doing this with a huge variety of machines. I am never sure where the level is; the whole stick is covered in oil even after standing more than a week it was no different. I of course always clean the stick properly before dipping and often touch it onto paper to help see where it is wetted.
I don’t know if this is because of the highly thixotropic character of the synthetic oil, but it always leaves a meniscus witnesses in the roots of all the ball swellings, even the upper guide one.
Could be that my vehicle is not using oil, but in 7000+ miles I have only drizzled in, in total, under a litre; mainly out of growing fear.

[As an amusing aside I did have a VW Beetle that actually “Gained” oil on the dipstick that was until I took it for a long high speed run; the water produced by combustion , and then getting into the sump then got boiled off!]
