Engine oil level increasing. Not normal I'm sure.

2016 3.0L Diesel Graphite 85,000 miles

I change my engine oil/filter every 5000miles. I usually suck out between 5.5l and 6.0l depending if I change the filter. Tonight I sucked out 7ltrs....

Where has the extra come from? Fuel dilution? I’m pretty relaxed sitting here right now as the level is spot on and oil is all fresh but any thoughts would be great.
Mileage is done mostly on the M40 by SWMBO.

Send a sample of oil off for analysis - it’s the only way to know for sure.

At 5000 mile intervals you should only expect 1.5% fuel dilution

I bought a 65k miles Jaguar XF, 3.0L, with thick fuel vapour from the exhaust at tick over, virtually no throttle response. Also, a failed turbo, sure to be fuel in the engine oil.

Only vague history, but I was told that the problem originated from contaminated fuel. Two faulty injectors but the main problem is elsewhere in the fuel system.

Also may be worth considering failed or incomplete DPF regenerations?

Ford engines are well known for this.... I'm sure its the same for all DPF equipped engines.


In the wisdom of car makers they have not added a light or warning as to when a regeneration is taking place.... the driver then unwittingly turns the car off as they have finished their journey.

If a regen was taking place and didn't complete the unburned fuel is returned to the sump! A terrible idea but they all do it.

It only takes 2 or 3 regens to not complete and the oil will be over full.


Just worth considering. Especially as Ford are well involved in the development of our Disco's!


So if your oil is examined and contaminated with diesel it isn't alway "a fault".... just crap design!!
 A mod a week until I have nothing to improve or add.

Millers oils - I always send of a sample of my oil for analysis to them. Turn it around in about 5 working days

At low speed the DPF regeneration is cutback to avoid excessive heating due to lack of airflow. There will not be extra fuelling at shutdown.

Most of the extra dilution of oil is due to cylinder-wash from fuel condensing on cylinder walls that are not at full operating temperature - even a failed FBH can cause additional dilution effect, as well as the obvious things such as faulty glow-plugs

If the injector nozzles are producing only a partially atomised fuel charge then this can also cause additional wash effect but you also tend to get other symptoms of poor performance and smoke. A nozzle itself leaking is rare but has been known on shutdown. The amount is tiny but the engine makes a different sound on ignition off and the engine is hot.

BTW - the maximum fuel dilution I’ve ever had was 4% or approx 200ml in a sump of 5.7 litres

A bit embarrassing to admit it but in the spirit of thread conclusion, I have found the reason for an increase in the volume of old engine oil removed from my sump.

There is nothing wrong with my car. I have been collecting the warm/hot sucked out oil in a used 10ltr adblue container (container side marked by me in 1ltr graduations). The container has over time changed its shape probably due to the oil warmth/heat meaning that the quantity markings became useless. These containers are probably ok for one or two use’s.

Sorry. This thread has not added anything to the pool of knowledge on the forum and just only shows that what my wife says about me is correct.

My wife once asked me how much oil does her Mini need as she had already put 5 litres in the engine and it still was not full? Big Cry
