Engine Oil Level Monitor System Fault

Quite new to the D4 only had one since November last year MY2015. Looking for a bit of advice, had a warning come up on my D4 about 4 weeks ago saying Engine Oil Level Monitor System Fault. After finishing my journey I turned the engine off and restarted it and the error message had cleared. It hasn’t come on since, when I check the oil level it is always showing full, the last service was 4501 miles ago and the car has done just under 28000 miles. What I am concerned about is whether the Oil monitor is working as I thought the SDV6 3.0l burnt oil and had to be topped up every so often, I don’t want to damage the engine by having a low oil level. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

The fault probably needs attention. As for oil burn mine has never needed a top-up.

Yep, I do 8-10k miles a year and never been off full on the display. (2016MY registered Jun 2015)

Agree you should get it checked.

It must be something in the oil, mine did the very same on Sunday.
Same age , same mileage.

Thanks guys, spoke to dealership this morning, they didn’t seem to concerned due to the fact it hasn’t happened again since. They seem to think it was just a glitch but said keep an eye on it and if it happens again then book it in.

Its a known fault, oil gets into the wiring in the sump and shorts it out, had it on mine, went away for approx 6 months then did it again. If car is under warranty get it sorted, new sensor, wiring and a retention plate. Its a sump off job and best part of 2 days labour so your looking at a bill for best part of £1000.
Do a search on the forum, theres been a couple of threads on this. Tell tale sign of oil in wiring harness is if they take wiring plug off at sump there will be signs of oil inside.

Thanks Trevor,
My Landrover 3yr warranty ran out on the 15th March, as I only bought the car in Novemeber 2017 it’s on a 2 year Landrover Approved Used Warranty now. Is that likely to cover this as a known fault?

I had the very same fault with my 2015 model after only 20k miles.

It was a replacement loom as above and it took a couple of workshop days for them to sort it.

Glad it was covered by the warranty!!

My '10 plate D4 did that when I first had it, was still under original LR warranty at the time and the dealer sorted it out - so should be covered by the extended warranty.

Had the same fault, cleared a few times but eventually comes back, fortunately LR are going to fix it under warranty, oil in the wiring loom, known fault, 2 day job, update includes a modification to the system.

I get this message flash on the dash every so often and displays for about 0.5sec, rather annoying more than anything. Clearly it is a false error because I know how many litres of oil is put in and extracted between services.

As you know it’s a costly and labour intensive job to replace a $200 sensor.

Is there a way to disable the engine oil system monitor fault checks/or perhaps the polling intervals in the ccf editor? Surely there must be a flag which can be disabled.
 Regards
Imaz
