Engine Rebuilt - Experiences UK

I think it would be great to hear from all those who have had a D4 3L engine rebuild on their experiences after the rebuild. Who rebuilt the engine, how long ago, how many miles covered since rebuild and any issues or lessons learned such as ensure your build included a change in turbos or other ancillary parts. Would be great to hear some positive outcomes and tips.

My D4 spun its bearings recently at 92k. Going to rebuild it soon.

2016 SDV6 with AdBlue, replacement engine with JLR (contributing) after bearings spun/crankshaft issue at 42,000 miles.

Now done 60,000k and runs beautifully, but make sure to replace engine oil every 5000-7000 miles.

42,000! Gulp. Glad replacement unit fairing better. Once I get mine rebuilt, I plan to change the oil and filter every 6 months which would only be 3000 miles for me.

6000 miles a year would suggest it might not be the right car for you. Short trips = oil dilution.

Big end bearing failure at 52k miles. Oval Autos in Cradley Heath rebuilt it.

- replaced crankshaft (wasn't snapped but too deeply scored)
- bottom block cracked so replaced
- both turbos reconditioned
- injectors were dripping so replaced 5 of those
- new propshaft, auxiliary battery came up as they gave it a full check
- plus belts, pulleys, gaskets per their advert.

I would recommend them. Excellent job. Runs super sweetly now. No shake on start up and (feels) like every bit of horsepower is there.

Post build issues? I have had three things to do with loose connections since, over the course of 18 months: Loose alternator wire which eventually required a replacement of the alternator; intercooler hose came off (jubilee clip not tight enough?); intercooler elbow (big plastic bit that looks like it goes into throttle body?) unclipped itself. Last two easy enough to sort at the side of the road. Alternator was not cheap.

If you don't mind me asking, how much does that cost.
I have noticed up and down the Web.
If they are going to fail it seems like they fainbelow 80k.
Any one else notice that

This was two years ago. I think it was 3700 for the gen2 rebuild plus all the other bits. 1000 crankshaft; 900 recon both turbos; 1250 on 5 injectors; 1000 on a bottom block; plus VAT. Obviously if your engine hasn’t broken anything then you don’t need all the extra bits.

I suspect it was caused - in hindsight - by the previous owner living in a city and doing fewer oil changes than necessary. The oil dilution issue.

80% contribution from JLR, 29% I paid approx £3k for just short block and labour. Turbos were fine but needed at least two months in the garage.

Sweden 2013 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 HSE Auto Java BlackDiscovery 4

I had my engine tdv6 3.0 l rebuilt by Oval.
Sent it from Sweden.
Got it back and it has from the return used 1 ltr oil every 3500 kms.
They offered me to return the engine but I had to pay workshop costs and freight.
This is of course too expensive and I have no choice other than driving the car and fill oil all the time.
Have changed turbos, CSOV, oil catcher and more. Nothing helps.

Because of this I cannot recommend Oval. I know at least two other cases with the same problem from Oval.

Caveat, received the new engine with a few recommendations, premium fuel, oil change to spec at 6000 mile, occasionally giving a good run on the highway at full speed to clear the DPF

If you get a code reader like iCarsoft, under the ECM there is % full, soot mass/m3, distance since last regen. I do a lot of town driving (yes, I know I should have a different car), when the soot mass is 23g/m3or greater or 70%full (I think that’s the units) I drive it for about 12 miles at 50mph because the car will then trigger the active regen. Never had a failed or partial one. Reckon mixed with occasional longer distances that means an oil change every 8000km to make sure diesel dilution doesn’t cause you long term problems. The car also estimates that factor by counting the number of active regens - I think when it hits assumed 6% dilution it tells you to go for a service…
