Just for information, I spoke to the place in Leverkusen that can replace the engine.

The engine is taken from a accident damaged D3 or RRS. They have done a service on it (oil change), replaced the timing belt, and the oil pump.

The full cost (including them coming to collect the D3) is €5399.

That includes a 1 year warranty (from an external company).

The turn around for the repair is 1 week.

I am waiting to see if LR actually respond (no reponse yet), and I might well get this done because that way I at least have the D3 up and running within a reasonable time-frame, and have a warranty on the replacement engine.

I don't think that's too bad, considering they are doing all the donkey work ( as long as they can be trusted to do a good job)...... Should have a good vehicle at the end of it. Thumbs Up

I agree... I just don't know if they are a trustworthy garage!!

I have never been to them before.

I have two choices... this garage for a replacement engine (lower mileage than the one I have) but I don't know if the garage is reputable. Time: 1 week.

option 2:
A friend of mine says he can refurbish my current engine, but I don't know the exact price (He simply said that he has never been paid any where near the price the other place are asking). He will do a good job, but I have no idea how long he will take. He may even say that he cannot get the parts. I don't know.

So... what should I do?????

Update:
I heard from LRCS today, and basically they deny that there has ever been a problem with the oil pump on any D3, and consequently they will not do anything.

I think we should tell all the people on this site (and others) that there isn't a problem with any of the timing belt tensioner/oil pumps, and that they should stop whining. Shocked Shocked

So... I have contacted anther LR garage, and they want approx €10000 to replace the engine. It looks like I will take a chance on the one in Germany. It will be better than what I have now!!

Here is a copy of their e-mail.

First of all, we would like to thank you for clarifying the situation and for the background information - highly appreciated.

Unfortunately, Jaguar Land Rover Benelux cannot intervene in this case, since the vehicle is out of warranty. A commercial intervention to repair the engine is therefore not possible. Moreover, we confirm that this particular VIN number has never been the subject of a service action or recall of some sort and certainly not regarding a faulty oil pump. We deeply regret to be unable to assist you further with this case.

Should you require more information, do not hesitate to contact us again

I have spoken to two LR dealers here (one in Belgium, and the other in Germany) and they both claimed that they have NEVER come across any problem with the oil pump shearing off where the tensioner attaches to it.

You have to wonder what world they are living in!!

They are obviously either not honest, or they are not interested enough in their work to do any form of research other than what LR tell them.

Since LR have not OFFICIALLY recognised that there is a problem with this, the dealers are going to hide their heads in the sand and pretend that there isn't a problem.

I have sent them a link to this forum showing the number of people that have had this problem. They won't do anything with it, but you never know. They may learn something about their own vehicles!!

Nick - as you say, “haven’t officially recognised” Rolling Eyes

But surprised that the Belgium dealer didn’t confirm anything (if you are referencing Habay) as I know they have worked on D3’s with failed pump !

Stiff, I was indeed talking about Habay.

I phones them this afternoon, and spoke to their head mechanic, and he specifically said that "I have taught him something" regarding the oil pump problem.

Never mind... I think that the problem is actually that they don't want to admit anything!!

I have contested the decision from LR, and they are just being difficult.

They now told me the following:

Quote:
However, we deeply regret to confirm you our point of view in our email dated yesterday. The problem you mentioned was applicable of a limited number of VINs - SALLAAA648A464088 was not one of them. Moreover, according to the dealer, Jaguar Land Rover Luxembourg, the final maintenance was performed in 2015.

This is rubbish... I have the invoices for the services (done at LR Luxembourg) from the moment the car was bought right up until 2017!! LR Luxembourg are telling porkers!!

I told LRCS this, and I have now had the following answer (more excuses):

Quote:
Probably, I have misunderstood Jaguar Land Rover Luxembourg about the service history, however, this does not alter our point of view, unfortunately.

> The Discovery has been out of warranty since seven years;
> the VIN was not related to any recall or service action whatsoever.

Have a lovely weekend.

I am really shocked how BAD CS is at LR. Do they not care about their clients????

Small update...

I have pointed out that I am not questioning if the car is under warranty, but the fact that the oil pump should have been replaced at the time of the timing belt replacement.

Anyway... suddenly they have now asked to see the invoice from when the timing belt was done.

MAYBE I am getting somewhere!!

I have sent the invoices that show that the LR dealer replaced the timing belt in September 2015. In September 2017, the whole thing failed. Only 2 years.

Now LRCS haven't even responded.

I hope that they get back to me asap because the car is supposed to be being taken to Germany for a replacement engine on Thursday or Friday.

Well... LRCS have responded today.

Here is a copy of their response:
Quote:
When the timing belt has to be replaced, the oil pump does not necessarily have to be changed as well. This is stipulated quite clearly in the technical procedures Jaguar Land Rover employees have to follow. Therefore, we may conclude that nor the importer, nor Jaguar Land Rover Luxembourg can be held responsible for the damage.

So... they are YET again wriggling out of accepting responsibility.

They have already tried to say that my VIN was not in the range concerned, but since my VIN is: SALLAAA648A464088, and from what I have seen on other posts on this site the affected range is: 8A457086 to 9A508509, I think that my VIN IS in this range.

Anyway... they are certainly not honest, and I am absolutely disgusted!!

I will not be recommending ANYONE that I know to have anything to do with LR BENELUX.

I really wish that there was more that I could do, but sadly I am, like anyone else who has had this same problem, completely at their mercy.

So... tomorrow my Discovery is going on a "holiday" for 1 week, and will be having an engine transplant.

New engine has done 90000km. They are replacing oil pump, timing belts and I have asked them to replace the glow-plugs as well.

After that, I have to get it registered under my name, and then all should be OK (I hope!!).

I guarantee one thing... I will NEVER buy anything (not even a washer) from LR Luxembourg again!!

I will ONLY go to their free LR days so that I can have a good meal (at their cost!!)

Well... D3 is repaired.

I am collecting it on Friday.

I will immediately have 200km to drive back home, so will give the cat a good test.

The place had to replace the turbo as well, but now I have 1 year warranty on the engine + turbo.

They were actually very efficient. I just hope they have done a good job.

I will report back!!
