After few instances over last few months of EPB locking on (cleared by switchng off and restarting), last week I had a cuple of "screams" after applying when stationary. Not recurred since. Ringing round a few people produces contradictory responses. Indie in Honiton Devon quoted c£500 for new actuator (3+ hours at £45 per hour) and said already f**ed - may be more if has scored rear discs requiring replacement. Yoevil LR contradicted this -0 siad i have a situation of EPB beginning to go but othergarage commens ob rear discs completely wrong as doesn't act on them ( one and a half hours work at £95 ph to replace actuator - ouch!). JE engineering in coventry said need to put on diagnostics first.
So, if I leave itr for a bit, is the damage increasing, or is it already done ???

Having translated your post, it sounds like it just needs adjusting - shouldnt take longer than 1 hour (inc taking the wheels off).
have a look in Bodsy's gallery for pdf'd explaining the procedure. Even you local indie could do it Duncan

If it's just stuck on a couple of times, this can often be fixed by stripping down the rear brakes (EPB shoes) and adding some coppergrease to the points that rub (Disco Mikey posted abouit that one). If it's a screamer, then that's usually caused by the EPB shoes needing to be adjusted, which is straight forward with some basic tools and a torque wrench.
Once it's adjusted (both sides, properly) then you should not get a screamer again for a fair while).
Just because it screams, does not mean it needs a new actuator, although if you leave it screaming too many times, then yes, it will end up needing a new actuator as the scream is the clutch mechanism over stretching. Bodsys Brake Bible

Mine was screaming because the brake shoes had delaminated on the one side and the actuator couldn't apply the tension it needed. A set of shoes and a couple of hours and it was sorted. Never had a moments trouble since. If it just needs adjusting then that's even easier, but if you have to adjust it too far then its a sure sign that there's something wrong with the shoes (on that side at least). The only tricky part is stretching the incredibly strong springs into position when putting the new shoes on The how to on here in the 'sticky' is great.
