EPB Question

Good morning to all,

Quick question regarding the rear brakes/EPB adjustment as I’m planning to do them first time.
I am planning to change pads on my D3 TDV6 2006 during the weekend.
My Handbrake makes a slight clank noise when latching, and gives an error only when the car is facing downhill (on a steep gradient) which is usually resolved by switching the car off and on again. Other than that no issues.
I have not checked my handbrake shoes yet so don’t know if I’ll be changing them or only adjusting them. (I will clean them quite thoroughly though using brake cleaner - Please correct me if this is a bad idea and I need to use something else)

Having read Bodsy’s Brake Bible (V 1.4), my question(s) are,

It says to put the EPB into service mode before starting. Is the adjustment done while in Service mode?

Also, if indeed I need to change the handbrake shoes, is the bedding in of the shoes done while in service mode?

And finally, as it says in the bible, bedding in process is only required if I discs or handbrake shoes are replaced. I’m planning to have the discs skimmed (not the inner handbrake part). Will they need bedding in again?

Thank you in advance

Yes cleaning them with brake cleaner is perfectly acceptable but ideally you need to remove the shoes and lubricate all the pivot points, if they start to seize it can cause issues. this is best done by putting the EPB into mounting mode using diagnostics as it gives you extra handbrake cable.

Just follow Bodsy's bible and dont worry about doing the bedding in process.

Hi aja4x4

Thanks for the reply. I was just making sure for all the above

I have the GAP II Tool to put it in service mode. is the adjustment done while in Service mode though or just the cleaning?

Lubricate with copper grease?

You adjust in service mode, you only adjust the shoes the epb adjusts the cables when you go out of service mode.

In my opinion it is extremely important to use only original Landrover spare parts.

BTW: It's easy to change the mudguard around the backplate:

And with a shrink tube, the brake lines (and others) are easy to clean and to oil. Of course also directly on the Discovery:
