EPB and Ride Height Problems - CanBus/Electrical Issues?

I currently have a sick Disco sitting in my barn on its bump stops. It recently had issues with it's EPB so in order to pass the MOT, the garage bypassed the switch on the console so the EPB operated manually - but the EPB light is constant amber, they said something about a comms fault.

A short while after I got it back from the garage, a suspension fault occured an it sunk down to it's bump stops and there it has stayed.

Having seen some of the posts on here, I bought the Autel AP200 diag kit, plugged it in and got the following reports. I would appreciate any info you may have about my results.

I have a feeling that the comms is failing and that is what is caused both EPB and suspension faults but tbh I am guessing. Here's a link to some PDFs.

Hope you can access this, it's a onedrive link.

Cheers,
Rich.

Thanks Pete. Is the cable route obvious when I get under there?

OK, so I am finally getting around to fixing the disco, it's been in the barn gathering dust and on a battery conditioner for a while.
I've got the wheel arch covers off, got it onto axel stands and dropped the spare wheel. I've downloaded the circuit diagrams for the suspension module and deciphered them (I think). It looks like there are 4 connectors that are candidates for checking continuity.

One question, is there a way of identifying the location of the various connectors shown on the diagrams? eg. c2053->c2054, c2293->c2294.

I know that some are under the drivers-side front wheel arch cover, where are the others?

Thanks,
Rich.

Check the wires to the connectors top of the chassis rail, to the left of the spare wheel well. Particularly the black connectors, these are the C0390/C0376 pair:

https://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpics/10002/C0376.pdf

I had broken EPB switch to EPB module wires here, so I bypassed the connector pair entirely for those, and it's been perfect since.

From the codes it looks likely you've got a broken or intermittent CAN bus to the EPB module, as Pete says check the yellow/brown and yellow/black wires - pins 4 5 6 7. There are two pairs as the EPB module has an in and out connection to the CAN bus.

To ID where the other connectors are and what they look like you need the Electrical Library (where those PDFs above come from) as well as the wiring diagrams.

Fab.

Just about ready to dive-in. I will document my findings.

Many thanks.

Thumbs Up

Definitely look here first, if you notice your diagnostic report does not report faults from the EPB module itself - suggesting it is missing from the CAN bus.

New info - corroded cable

It's taking a while I know, and this is an old thread of mine, but Disco still on axle stands in my barn.

I had a look underneath this evening and found a corroded cable near the compressor cover.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gsc1egPTn...sp=sharing

on closer inspection and peeling back some of the protection, it looks like a previous repair to a rather thick green/yellow wire. The copper seems to have completely disintegrated.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1govxZvJYu...sp=sharing

I'm guessing this is an earth cable, so I suspect it would cause all manor of problems. Question is, how do I repair it - being such a thick cable.

Cheers.
Rich.

Looking at the electrical diagram, page 12 (206-05) seems to be the only one that mentions a green/yellow cable. It looks like a 30A feed (hence cable thickness).

That seems like an awful lot of current to put through a repaired cable, which might explain why the repair didn't last. LOL

BTW, what does the SJ prefix indicate on the wiring diagrams (eg SJ406 with a black dot) - I can't see any reference in the wiring doc.

I only have the "connector quick reference guide" for a Disco4 and the connectors all seem to start with 'C'.

Cheers.

Update

OK, it's been a while, the Disco has been sitting in my barn.

I traced the green/yellow wire and found a few more corroded bits. I have replace a whole section and now I have no major faults. Yey.

Now I have to find out why the parking brake had to be by-passed with a rocker switch, see if I can restore the original wiring.

Further progress

OK, I have removed the EPB module - a right PITA because the mounting plate had been welded to the chassis. So removal was a struggle.

I have found that the power to the motor had been disconnected and a new feed created to a momentary switch in the cabin next to the original parking brake switch. This manually powered the EPB mechanism, bypassing the module circuit board.

It looks like the green/yellow wire was feeding power via the module to the motor, so I imagine that would be why the EPB stopped working, followed by the suspension, that wire looks like it powers both units.

So I have just re-assembled and sealed the EPB module. I will now remove the spurious new feed, it looks like it uses a piggy-back connector into the fusebox behind the glove box. Don't know yet if they removed the main EPB fuse.

So I am not far away from re-assembling and booking an MOT. At that point, if it passes, I will look into the drone in the front diff and do a full service.

D3 EPB Update

I finally got some joy with the EPB having stripped the discs and brake shoes down, cleaned and reassembled (twice because the cable detached from one of the shoes the first time doh)

This is a video of the first time I pulled the switch and it worked - no lights no error codes. Yey!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vo4-aMipekw

Great, I thought!

Re-assembled every thing I'd taken off the car to do the investigation (including re-sealing the EPB cover). Went to drive it out of the barn for a test drive, and get a bloody U2002-01 fault and the red light starts flashing again! Arghh!!

Do I just get a new switch? I have checked continuity of the wiring through to the NSR wheel arch and all seemed good.[/url]
