Europe Garmap

I need some advice please. I am travelling to Italy next week and will be needing a GPS to drive around there. I wanted to buy the maps here in SA but was told that it is actually cheaper to buy the GPS with maps in Europe, is this true, the mapset cost about 95 Euro's (R1000) here in SA. Why garmap, compare the cost of garmin map for Europa surely you can just down load the map from the website ?
