European Breakdown Insurance
I know this will be a subjective topic but does any one have experience of European Breakdown cover? I will be towing an expedition trailer through Spain and Portugal and would need them repatriated if I couldn't get them fixed abroad. To extend my current RAC cover will cost another £150

I had a standalone RAC European cover for a trip to France last year, £65.
I'm not an RAC member, just bough this after an internet trawl.Richard

Check and understand cover limits closely, some have a limit of the number of “breakdowns” and an overall trip limit. I was with AA/Eurotunnel but binned that mid policy and changed to the top RAC cover having experienced 2 breakdowns under the former. The more you see “unlimited” in the cover description the better.

There are a couple of levels of the RAC cover. The top one will repatriate your car, then next one down will, but only up to the value of the vehicle. Read the terms carefully (at least this was the case last year when I looked) and don't just take the word of the sales person on the phone... they were lovely, but I was discussing an edge case which they'd little experience of.
My D3 which I've had for years is worth considerably more to me than the probably worthless value an insurer would put on it.

...actually, I think that 'beyond economical repair' is new, and wouldn't help me 2020 SDV6 D5 HSE, Carpathian Grey +

Thanks all, some really useful advice, especially looking for unlimited clauses and them only paying up to market value of vehicle. Have just called the RAC, they have given me a further 10% discount on their top level cover so will go with that.

Also watch as a lot of the companies have maximum trailer lengths
From memory RAC have a maximum of somthing like 7 meters but if you do i through one of the caravan clubs then RAC has no limit!!!!! But otherwise its the same policyMY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

Breakdown Cover
2 years ago I had the Pleasure of blowing the Turbo in my Volvo Xc90 towing my caravan back from France to Ireland, on the way to the ferry might I add. Of course it happened the weekend of St Bastille day so the Volvo garage said that they wouldn't be able to take a look at the Volvo for another 2 weeks . I always take out breakdown Insurance and mine that year was with Aviva. They put us up in a hotel for another 3 nights until the next ferry left for Ireland. They gave us a hire car to the ferry France side, then another hire car Ireland side for a week. They then shipped my Volvo and caravan (which I might add is 7.75 mts long, double axle) back to my door in Ireland about 4 weeks later . All in a good service for 75 euro and I took out last years Insurance with them again and it was still 75 euro for the year. Can't complain really, I leave that too SWMBO.
Serves me right for picking that vehicle. Last year disco 3 no problems so hoping for a 2 year streak this year.
