Excessive black smoke

My D3 has been belting out excessive black smoke recently and I thought the cure would be a new air filter. Changed the filter last night, but alas today no change.

Any ideas, doesn't seem to be much of a drop off in power, but plenty of black smoke when I hit the throttle???

Crikey, wasn't expecting anything as drastic as that. What sort of money are you talking for new hoses or a new turbo?

One costs 50 quid and the other 1000....

You can probably work out which is which. Whistle

If it's just a load of black smoke and you still have power, then the hose is the likely suspect, but there's been a lot of dead turbos on here lately so you never know...

I'll keep my fingers crossed it's one of the hose(s) Thumbs Up

When I first had mine it had a smoking problem.

Then after a run to Dusseldorf it got really bad.

New turbo & Intercooler on warranty thankfully.

£2500 at the stealer.

Sorry hope its not the case.

PS i didnt seem to have a lack of power either - weird!

You guys are not saying anything to cheer me up yet. Might adopt the stance of the Ostrich until something really goes bang. Any other possibilities?? and will continuing to drive in the interim make it worse??

I posted yesterday to seek advice on my turbo which has just been given the thumbs down by the dealer, I have no loss of power just an intermittent fault that sends the vehicle into 'limp' mode, I would expect yours to do the same if it had a turbo fault... having said that the dealer was surprised that there was no black smoke coming out of mine!

I would wait until the vehicle reports a fault and then get it plugged in to get the code and find out what it says is wrong, I am no techic and I am sure someone will be along shortly to give you proper advice... but having just been quoted 1900 for a new turbo by the dealers I vote for head in sand time until something actually goes wrong!

Steve

P.s. You can get the turbo done cheaper 1200 at Nene Overland for example

EGR's Question , mine poured out loads of black smoke when it went. Then suffered lack of power.

Just had my second EGR replaced under Warranty, Both occasions highlighted by engine management light coming on. Each time dealers first question was are you getting lots of black smoke. I wasnt, but it does seem to be the usual indicator. Keep everything crossed, if plug in check confirms EGR search this forum for EGR blanking -it seems to be the way forward!!

The reason you get error messages is because your D3 is a EURO IV engine - even if you blank off the EGRs you will still get error messages and fault codes logged.

It will fix the performance issues however Thumbs Up

I have a 2006 (EURO III) with blanked off EGRs and if they fail, everything will carry on as normal, but you will not be so lucky Thumbs Up

I know it's a pain, but it's probably better to replace the EGRs in your case Thumbs Up

In a bid to fix the problem, I took it Stratstone Bury on Firday before driving to the Lakes. Transpires it was the intercooler hose that had split wide open.

Hats off to Stratstones though, none in stock, so they took one off another 58 plate knowing I needed the car that day.

As for me saying there was no drop of in performance, I was talking cr*p, as soon as I drove away I realised how much it had been losing beforehand.
