Exhaust blow at 1650 rpm exactly

My D3 TDV6 had a recon engine 5000 miles ago. It's just developed a noise which seems to be the exhaust blowing somewhere in the region of the turbo. There is no loss of power, or anything visible. It comes in only when accelerating or decelerating (not stationary when in neutral - it's an auto), and also with the vehicle in "drive" and with the foot on the brake. It comes in quite loud at something after 1600 rpm, and disappears before 1700 rpm, and the opposite when decelerating. There is a definite smell of exhaust gas under the front left hand wheel arch. The problem is you can't get to have a look at it as it's just too crammed with goodies, heat shields etc. Any ideas?

It sounds like the exhaust flexi joint just below the turbo , raise your suspension to off road you'll be able to see it , use a torch to look for sooting around the pipe , give it a rev to see if you can exhaust gas
Thumbs Up

3 flash indicators
All timing belts changed
EPB serviced

Thanks, I'll give it a go. I had a mechanic here today and he couldn't see anything, but maybe I can get it on a ramp to make it easier to see.

I had an exhaust place have a look at it, and they say it's the "turbo pipe" leaking. I'm assuming they mean the main pipe from the exhaust manifold to the turbo. Doesn't look like much fun to get to it. Any ideas? Tips?

There are 2x brackets holding this x-over pipe on - there are hard to get to and some mechs don't bother... eventually the vibration gets to them and they fail.

Get who ever did your recon engine to replace it for free.
