Exhaust fumes

My 2005s exhaust fumes stink awful even at idle, and if left idling you can see them after a while, it's had egr valves blanked off and cat knocked out (previous owner) would this cause the excessive fumes? Also there are no fault codes and injectors are all within spec

Theres an exhaust pipe called the crossover pipe that runs accross the back of the engine its common for these to split and cause fumes in the cab.
Use the search function there are quite a few threads on the subject.

Discoveries smell pretty diesel-y compared to modern diesels. But the cat removal with be the thing that has made it worse than normal
