Experimenting with camera mount positions / safety

I’ve only just started to venture off road in my Disco3. Having driven a few local green lanes last week I attended a LROAC event this weekend. A big thank you to Windy Corner for offering to chaperone, I’m sure our paths will cross soon!

Wanting to record these first trips I‘ve experimented with different camera mount positions.

I’ve posted a brief video here:

Please let me know what you think.

The “drive by” shots were taken with the camera mounted on a tripod. I had to run ahead, frame the shot and press record. I then went back to the car and drove past the camera.

On a safety note: I wanted to get some exterior shots at Yarwell but was afraid to leave the car. It was my first visit to a pay and play site so I didn’t know what to expect. It’s impossible to see beyond the bonnet when nearing the top of a steep incline. This lack of visibility seems to coincide with the point at which you really need to step on the gas – very counter intuitive! Needless to say; I stayed in the car.

Has anyone got any tips for shooting action sequences and staying safe when outside the vehicle?

Thanks for the positive comments Simoniz. On a safety note; hi viz is a good idea. I might also add a helmet and body armour incase I end up as fish bait (bigcarpchaser)!

FYI the camera I used is a Canon G9 in a WP-DC21 waterproof housing. It's a stills camera but has capability to record low resolution video. The video is fine for Youtube but is less than half the resolution of a 1080p HD screen.

The housing is attached to a Manfrotto 484RC2 ball head. The camera and head are attached to the Disco via a Manfrotto Super Clamp and a suction glass lifting thingamyjig handle from B&Q. The glass handling device adheres well to the flat panels of the disco. The camera can be attached to the windows, door panels and bonnet.

There are professional vacuum rigging devices on the market for much more money!

The setup looks like this:

The G9 has been superceded now; however, the setup works for me because I can achieve stills and video with a single, lightweight, weatherproof camera. Performance is OK during the day but grainy in low light.

Cheers bud.
I had a G8, good camera!!
I'm playing with a hitachi 1080i VCR tomorrow. It was half price from comet.
A whopping £150!! No idea if it will be any good but for that money you can't really go wrong Thumbs Up

Good luck with that. HD is the way to go. But remember; it's where you put it that counts!

I know it couln't help a lot,
but just in case you buy an elmo suv-cam with the water-proof head,
the best position I found(IMO) is in the rear mirror,
it gets all the spalsh an dirt with no worry to give a perfect real environmet experience.
I don't know how to up-load the video, but look at my gallery for the fitting

cheers Thumbs Up
