Brake lights are 'driven' by FET's in the CJB, the switch signals the CJB on a LIN, if the FET's output is pulled low or fail to draw sufficient current a DTC is set, this is broadcast on the high-speed CAN to various modules including the ECM & TCM

FET = field effect transistor
LIN = Local interconnect network (private network)
CJB = central junction box
ECM = engine control module
TCM = transmission control module
DTC = diagnostic trouble code (fault code)
CAN= controller area network
