Extracting Hydrogen From Water to Improve Fuel Economy????

I had miy hair cut on the weekend and got talking to the barber in the usual way. He admired my Disco which was parked next to his diesel Pajero and told me about producing hydrogen from water and pumping that straight into the air filter of his car to improve his mpg. Well, beig a sucker for a good story and having to humour him a bit seeing as he had some very sharp razors close to my neck I went out and had a look at the setup.

It consisted of a plastic wide necked bottle with lid that was half full of water and had some sludge at the bottom. There was a live (off the ignition) and earth cable entering the bottle. Both wires were submerged into the water (there might have been something else in the water as well?). A thin 6/8mm alcathene tube was run from the top of the bottle to a hole drilled in the air filter cover.

The barber, who I have known for years and is not one for tall tales was adamant that he was getting an extra 30% mpg using this setup and 'the engine soundes smoother'.

Any thoughts?

This is another take on perpetual energy: using diesel power to charge a battery for the electrolysis of water. There is no external input of power in this setup.

I can't see that this would produce enough gas to make any difference whatsoever. Now it's been many years since my A Level chemistry, but nonetheless, I can't see it happening in sufficient quantity......

Can't see enough if any hydrogen being produced by this, when enough is produced by this setup I suspect there will be, unfortunately, a Hindenburg-esq fire. Sad
 Cheers
