Hi , everyone. Just spent 9 great days in the Vic High country. Not without its worries though. I was only an hour or so into the first track ,a few low range ups and downs (cobberas track0 when F appeared on the transmission indicator, and limited gears available on the message centre, command shift not working. Turned engine off, waited restarted every thing seemed fine, continued driving for an hour the vehicle goes to limp mode , stopped and restarted all seemed fine. After that was a bit concerned but cotinued on .After thatcontinued the trip without any problems, a couple of tough climbs and descents (Mt Gibbo, Mt Pinnibar) and a highway trip home.Off to the dealer on Friday . Any thoughts.

Kev,
Mine had the same problems all the time
When the steeler put it on the computor at the workshop it listed pages of faults and there seemed no way of telling which fault or faults were the problem It was never resolved but the car being too smart for its own good decided to put an end to it by itself......FIRE.... end of problem
Eneyway this does not help your problem, the faults will have been loged and can be downloaded but it is a long and teedious task to sort out the real ones from the superflues ones.
You could check for faulty connections especially if you have been through water. WD40 or silicon spray may help.
Cheers

Hi Kev
Vic High is certainly a great trip, pitty you had the worry of transmission failure.
Mine went into limp home mode when I could not engage first gear, luckily it was while driving in the city.
The dealer put in a new transmission and problem solved.

Hi Kev,
I've had that "F" problem on the last couple of offroad trips too. (Matches what was said when you see the message)
I reckon it is due to an inadequate auto fluid cooling. Both times it has occurred with mine - has only been after low range work in pretty warm conditions.
I've heard of many others having this "F" problem as well.
Never had mine go into limp mode though - except on one of the HPFP failure episodes I encountered.
Cheers,
Rob

I've had this once in the new D3 and twice in the old one. On each occasion it was whilst towing, when slowing down to enter a small country town after a hardish run. Ignition reset cured it and in my case, it didn't return. So possibly somethng to do with the TX fluid and cooling? Although neither car have ever done it offroad, even in 40C temps.

I've had this a few times now. First when the car was new which ended up with transmission being replaced. Has happened again a few times recently, but always on road in similar circumstances to Gordon. A reset has always fixed it. Spookily, its happened twice in exactly the same place on the way to Orange.
Its in at Alto's being looked at now along with the noise in the front end. They told me yesterday they'd found the problem and are replacing the EGR valve! This probably explains the worsening lag, but a suspension fault? Hopefully when I get it back tomorrow I'll get the real story.
Wish Gary would come back to the front desk
Cheers,
Jon

So do I.
Fabio is helpful but in comparison to Gary knows nothing.
I think Gary is away on leave so may not even be out the back. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Big Kev,
I did a day trip in the vic high counrty at Easter in my 2008 TDV6. Up from Tom Groggin to the Davies high Plain hut and then back and up Mount Pinnibar.
Had the same message a couple of times as I neared the top of Pinnibar. Put it down to overheating in the transmission due to extended long and steep climbing in low range.
Both times the message came up I turned off and restarted no problems. At the top of Pinnibar I let is cool for a about 45 min, could hear a high pitch wine and pinging sound when I got out at the top.
No problems on the trip down and just did a weekend in the Abercrombie National Park, steep up and down with no problems at all.
My take is that in the Vic High country the sustained uphills means the fluids in the transmission must not be able to circulate properly and reduce the effectiveness of the cooling properties.
Mine did not go into limp mode however but did make for a nervous 45 minutes at the top of Pinnibar wondering how much fun the descent would be with limited gears avaialble. Used HDC a lot on the way down to give the transmission a break.
I will mention this to the stealer at next visit but hopefully a one off. Regards,
George

I did Vic High in January with temps reaching 43 deg and had no issues with overheating. I had the 40k service done by Graeme Coopers just before I left Sydney and they changed all the oils.
I had an old Rangie and a Defender with me, both having to stop on some of those long climbs to cool down. Maybe this was a blessing in disguise Take the road less traveled. check oil levels in transmission, maybe not enough to be pumped round on steep climbs causing overheating. There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song
