FAILED MOT ON SILLS

Hi folks
As the title says really, my beloved failed the MOT.
The sills are in a pretty bad way. Outer sill is coming away from the inner sill on the seem.
I fear once the plastic trim is off, it’ll be a lot worse. Does anyone know if I can buy new fabricated sills to weld on. Would be better than patching surely. If so can anyone point me in the right direction. Many thanks in advance.

Think you might be the first with an MOT fail.

How olds the car and if it had sill covers how did the mot tester check them unless they are really bad and obvious.

2005. Rust could be seen near the rear wheel from underneath. He was poking around. It didn’t go through but he said the seem was coming apart.

Where the inner and outer sills meet is a little way below the plastic cover and easily visible from underneath.

As I said an example picture 😂 this is not my vehicle. I wanted to just point out that he said it was coming apart at the seal. Where you see the steel sandwiched inside the black circle.

Have been a couple mentioned on here now, Disco Mikey was repairing one a while ago and I believe the problem is mainly with those who have had side steps on for years.

My 14 year old D3 without steps is fortunately still solid as a rock. I took sill covers off and Dinatrolled the cavities.

Thanks for the reply. I will get the covers off when the weather dries this weekend.
Will see what it’s like underneath

The subject of this picture is my car!

I pro-actively sought to inspect mine - as the car had an agricultural past prior to my ownership - that picture was taken after I had treated mine the first time round.

Sill covers removed and *loads* of mud/horse much removed from the location in question. I had some surface rust around the area but was really pleased to find that was all it was. 1st round of treatment was to scrub, then POR-15, and underbody spray over that.

I wasn't happy with it - so wen't back at it - this time wire wheeling back to bare metal, then kurust, zinc primer and java black from a rattle can. This thread shows what I also found when inspecting behind the rear wheel arch covers: https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/inspecting-...79613.html

Would recommend anyone with an early car to take the sill covers and rear wheel arch covers off and inspect accordingly.

Doubt you're the first with a MOT fail; I think we've seen a couple of reports of fairly hideous corrosion under the sill covers.

I want to find myself a range rover sport supercharged - but sill rust issue is detering me from any car with side steps - which rather limits my options!

Hi thanks for the tip of removing the rear inner wheel arches. I am going to reveal all over the weekend. Also thank you for the loan of your picture. It was the only one I could find on the net to show folk what I was talking about.
