Character you are talking a load of rubbish there, no where near the danger zone for the power cables as the pole is still intact and standing.
Intention was to try to get the car off the grass bank and across the road onto a lay bye out of the way of others, no chance as car was resting on floor on top of a mud bank all four wheels not really touching road. it been snowing for a while here in Bristol and I can still just about see the tarmac. Ive decided its far to dangerous to go outside at the moment, especially as the temp gauge says is nearly -2c Duncan

I've returned home, tried the Brenzett bypass and didn't think it was safe at 6am, my route was A2070 to A259 into Rye. Traffic news saying its littered with stranded vehicles so now having a snow day

yep good idea  the roads are very bad, the drifts in main roads are 4/5ft deep in places as well as lorry's,cars broken down everywhere

not going to argue the rights and wrongs by attempting the recovery, but IMO you are in a dangerous position on the road and in dangerous weather conditions, joe public looses control, smacks in to your vehicle or joe public comes t'other direction and snacks in to the power line to avoid yer......afterall you did say....

Have worked on the roads as a fire fighter dealing with RTC's for 20+ years, have high vis jackets plenty of lighting and posted other vehicles either side of bend prior to starting any work also with lights and high vis jackets warning other drivers. Further more, work in the electrictiy generation industry for 27 years as my main job, play with 11KV on a regular basis and know about the safe working arrangments are for this, on top of this we also receive various training from fire service about how to deal with RTC's involving high voltage power cables. So yes there may have been issues but not from the power cables and the traffic was controlled on the straight road approaching the bend to ensure we had a "safe woking zone", the idea of recovering the car was to prevent others from hitting it when no one was there to warn them of the impending danger on the bend. I'm surprised at the D4 not being able to move it, was the under tyre conditions really that bad?

I am always of the opinion, leave well alone, let the proper authorities see to it.
I would only intervene ( especially as a first aider) if injury occurred or lives were at stake.
You could end up wading in with good intention only to be embroiled in matters that didn't effect you in the first place.
Even something as simple as creating more damage to the vehicle (or even your own vehicle) than initially sustained in the accident.
I do salute the good intentions though
But what do I know, I'm only a cock who drives a white car
