Faux Pas over stereo upgrade

Hi,

I posted about my stupidity of buying a 6 Disc changer head unit to try and update my base single CD unit in my 2005 Disco3.

Helpful replies were given indicating that I was being really stupid.

To further fill you with joy (my stupidity knows no bounds) is there anyway at all I could use the new head unit?

Surely, I could get the power and aerial in from the old set up.

Do I need an amp, and then an optical cable to analogue to allow use of the speaker wires already present?

Please feel free to post rude replies, but some helpful advice would be nice as well. Even if that was to put the head unit up for sale on e-bay.

Your site is brilliant, by the way.

Thank you,

Grant

Different connections ...

6 disk radio/head unit

Base radio

Basically the base unit has the power and speaker connections .

6 disk one has power , NO speaker connections ..its sent down the fiber optics to the amp ,then distributed from the amp via normal speaker wires . It also has message center functnality ..if you remove the radio ..you cannot alter some of the car set up bits .

Dont know how technically minded you are ..but look here at the differences .

http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/use...tion~4.pdf

Sell it on ebay ..unless you want to change the whole car wiring loom , and buy all the other bits ..amp extra speakers , changing the car configuration files ...etc etc

One of these

You would need to fit a Hi line Amp under the drivers seat and connect this to the head unit with a fibre optic pair then route your speaker wires to the amp. The low line speakers will need uprating as they wont take the power that the amp can output. The old antennae will connect but the 6 cd head unit uses 2 antennae amps in the rear (antennae diversity) one which also splits to the other.

Then you will need to reprogramme the CCF data in the instrument pack to get it to all work.

Ok, thanks for that folks.

I will make do with the base unit for now.

Does anyone know which connector takes the live and earth on the 6 disk CD unit so I can put 12V's across it so at least I can see that it powers on and seems to function?

Re Simon:-I thought it was difficult to change the wheels as the air suspension kept compensating for the jack and you get into a pickle. Apparently, the sticker band across the windscreen is do-able.....

Cheers,

Grant

Sorry but I have to disappoint you. A sticker band on the windscreen could give problems with aautomatic wipers and your automatic headlights.
I think you still might be able to do the Disco3 stickers but thats all.

What are these magical things you talk about!!

I have a base 2005MY Disco and my right hand turns on the lights and wipers. I do have a horn on the steering wheel though!! (Does that make it multifunctional........) Laughing

I am not sure there is much data going between my old head unit and anywhere. Not even the clock appears in the DIS.

Hi Grant,

The D3 radios are permanently supplied with 12V and are 'switched on' via CANBus rather than with a switched 12V ignition feed.

I'll try and find the connections for you - not sure if it'll work though Thumbs Up

Would an adaptor to a different amp work?
Denison do adaptors for MOST systems what sort of connector and signal does LR use.

That is much better way of asking the question I was wondering about! Idea

I did spot the wiring diagram on Wiggs's reply (obviously after I posted indiscriminately about the voltage in and out) Sheep

Thanks for the discussion.
