FBH battery drain

Its that time of the year again for the FBH and I was wondering just how much drain the FBH puts on the main battery.

I'm thinking - when its operated by timer or remote the interior fans etc are triggered and are probably left running for 20 mins or so without the engine running. Is there a modification for the FBH or interior fans or both to be powered from the aux battery instead of the main battery or is the power drain negligible.

i'd need to check exact number but I believe it monitors both battery and fuel and cuts out if either hit a lower limit.

Sounds good and it does make good sense when you think about it - no point in having a nicely defrosted and heated car that won't start. Embarassed Thumbs Up

I'd still be interested in a modification tbh.

A warmer engine/battery is easier to start than a cold one. You don't need to use the glow plugs which are a much higher drain than the FBH.

After using the remote FBH function this morning my temp gauge showed a 1/4 or 50% warm on the temp gauge. So stress free engine starting and no glow plug use.

As a matter of interest how long was it running before you started the engine.

Sorry did not time it just the full cycle as factory programmed I guess. My guess 10 minutes.

Coincidentally I started the FBH with the remote a couple of days ago. It ran fine for a while, but when I went outside it had stopped. I thought that it must have run its cycle as I didn’t really take notice of how long it had been running for. When I entered the car, there was a message on the dash ‘Battery Level Low, Start Engine’. The car started fine thank goodness.

However, what was annoying was that I replaced the original LR battery (7-8 years old) earlier this year for a new one (recommended on this forum). I never had an issue with the old battery (which I still have), so am hoping that it was just a that the battery needed a boost as I had started the engine several times the previous day but only driven 2-3 miles. Ctek duly plugged in!

We’ll see, but to answer the question, the FBH cuts out to protect the battery power.

Thumbs Up It has to be good as previously stated - and reduced cold start engine wear. I 've ordered my remote from Bodsy the other day so I should be up and running soon.

We all know that from now on the battery will have to work a good bit harder as much more demand is put on it with increased use of lights, heated windows, fans & FBH etc - hence my interest in a mod to divert some of the increased load to the auxillary battery for those who have one fitted.

^ is there a cut out if the engine coolant reaches its required temp earlier than 30 minutes?

I thought it was only 20 mins factory set on the D4 - at least that is what mine does. The BAS remote for the D3 used to do 30 but then it did not do the fans which the D4 does. Think the Altox one can be programmed for longer.

Jim - if you have not got the Aux battery fitted yet, then look at the Traxide SC80 or one of their other isolators - I have just bought one for mine (but not yet fitted). This shares the load between the cranking battery and the aux and so in theory you will get less Battery Low messages even after using the timed climate.

I can only get about 4 timed climates from mine per week without it cutting the time short unless I have driven a reasonable journey. I would expect that given I only normally do a short school run in the morning and all the kids insist on having the seat heaters on - plus the heated screens when it is frosty, etc. My battery was new 9 months ago so think this is the best I will get. I normally give it an overnight conditioning charge once a week unless I use it for a long journey over the weekend.
