This is the main issue, IMO. The vehicle may have logged faults (certainly should have...) in the ECM or other modules. I would definitely take it to the dealer and see what it shows.

If there's no codes, it's probably a loose positive battery terminal. Sometimes happens in colder weather...

I am of the same view phurley, will book it in asap as I have not found any answers yet on the net.

And I will definitely ask what the trigger is.... will revert when I've been, though not likely to be for another week.

Just wondering, would the faults show in any of the "hidden" diagnostic screens?

Thanks

No. The diagnostic screens have limited information - sometimes can be helpful - but doesn't show diag codes from the various ECUs. Shortcoming, that, IMHO.

[EDIT: Forgot about Self Test screen on HLDF. Can't remember if it displays codes from vehicle ECUs or just from Infotainment systems. Will look up when back at home tomorrow.]

Yup, tried every possible combination of terrain response, with/without DSC, with/without HDC, auto, auto sport, manual in 1st, 2nd and 3rd.. admittedly I didn't try the solution of flooring it 20m before the hill and hope for the best like the RR did (seeing it bounce on it's way up put me off!!!)

errm. hem hem... did you try low range, revs above 2000 rpm, DSC off ? I've been up very steep stuff in Langenaltheim easily, things that hummers (I mean the real H1 army one) have trouble with.
There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song

Follow-up: The "hidden" diagnostics - one for HLDF and one for MMM(Nav) - have self-tests that display only THEIR OWN DTCs. DTCs from vehicle ECUs are not displayed.

Ahem... yes, in fact all combinations in both hi/low... Rolling Eyes

Plus I eliminated the obvious fault (being my off-road driving skills or actually lack of Laughing ) by asking others with considerably more experience to have a go...

Stubborn as I am, I will return with the same tyres once I've got some clarity on why it cut-off... Whistle

Thanks phurley, had a look myself last night... BTW, do you have any idea where the engine ECU diagnostic connector is? (not that I can do much about it at the mo, but who knows... Whistle )

The diagnostic socket is located below the steering column

BUT, that's not going to be much help, I'm afraid, as generic OBDII scanners are hit & miss. The primary diagnostic systems, IDS & Autologic, plus a only couple of other readers is all that I've heard that work. See this thread http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic28733.html

Did you check the security and condition of the battery terminals and clamps? Several similar incidents have occurred because of a loose ve+ clamp.

Also, although I have yet to witness this I did run across this blurb in some technical documentation
Quote:
Electronic Traction Control (ETC)
ETC attempts to optimize forward traction by reducing
engine torque or braking a spinning wheel until it regains
grip.
ETC is activated if an individual wheel speed is above
that of the vehicle reference speed (positive slip) and the
brake pedal is not pressed. The spinning wheel is braked,
allowing the excess torque to be transmitted to the
non-spinning wheels through the drive line. If necessary,
the ABS module also sends a high speed CAN bus
message to the ECM to request a reduction in engine
torque. Torque reduction requests are for either a slow or
fast response: a slow response requests a reduction of
throttle angle; a fast response requests an ignition cut-off [emphasis added].
When DSC function is manually disabled, the engine
torque reduction feature is disabled. When the ETC
function is active the ABS module also signals the TCM
to prevent gear shifts.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the diesels are supposed to fuel cut-off in the same situation.

Hmmm... firstly thanks for this phurley Thumbs Up

Just thinking here, an ignition cut-off is one thing, presumably relating to the spark plug current being cut-off (isn't that what the rev limiter does as well on petrol cars?) but diesels don't have spark plugs... Confused Unless it's done otherwise???

And alternating between cutting-off and then back on is I guess expected when the DSC is active, but in my experience the engine completely shut down (I did check the battery BTW, all ok, even on the day all electrics where working fine) which arguably is not a good safety response...

Thanks Bodsy, found the thread, though it's been quiet since December...

It seems to be a rather common occurrence though... Confused

LR recall part?
