I am considering switching in a while but being 6' 4" might prove it to be difficulty to replace roomy D4 and FFRR is out of price range
G
I'm 6' 5" and sat in First Edition D5 last Friday and spent quite a while adjusting the seat and steering wheel, whilst I fitted it didn't feel as comfortable as I would have thought and i also found I had to have the seat as far back as possible, something I don't currently need to do.
I'm also 6'5" and had to spend some time trying to get a good position. I did fit eventually but found i was looking through the top 6 inches of the screen. I think i needed to play with the seat more but my knees seemed high up which is what i think makes it feel car like.MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

On a 50 mile test drive (main roads in countryside) of a Td4 HSE today I was very impressed by the cabin, driving position, access to dials and controls, refinement, NVH (hardly any road or engine noise) and the whole thing TBH. And I got 49mpg (worked out manually and not relying on the OBC which was saying 51mpg for the trip).2016 Discovery 4 Commercial

Took my D4 in for a service on Friday and parked next to their demo D5 so took a couple of photos for comparison. Apologies for poor photos (taken on the phone) but shows that it is a lot lower than a D4 and seems to be wider - flares out over the wheel arches...
This is a 3.0 V6, they had an identical one in the showroom which I had a nose around while waiting for my service representative to finish speaking to the customer before me - have to say I don't like the 'squashed' look from the front, the rear looks terrible, the tailgate is a bit low for my height (although in defence so is the D4 when the bottom half is not open to stop me walking into the top bit) and middle seats are too low - seems to be a compromise to try to level the boot out when the seats are put forward??
No price shown for the car in the showroom but there was a RRS behind it and a FFRR opposite. Based on styling and interior, I'd say the RRS has a big enough boot to be a very worthy option and the price was less than the figures that are being bandied about on here for a D5. So, if on a budget and not needing the space for Tarquin's Cello etc. I'd go for the RRS. If money was not the limiter then I'd go for the FFRR with no hesitation, as it's not much more expensive and is in a different class altogether.
Clearly each to their own and I am sure LR have done their market research and we will see these cars popping up on driveways throughout suburbia as Mr & Mrs Average seek to outdo Mr & Mrs X5 one side and Mr & Mrs M Class the other - no doubt on finance deals so they get a new one every 3 years.
As an aside, I got loaned an 'ewok' for the day - no more D4 courtesy cars, their loan fleet have all been sold on, boy was I glad to get back into my D4 after that!D4 - Stornoway Grey

I know the Velar is a different (sub) market but, wow, it looks good. Shows JLR still have good design in them. Makes the D5 look more like a dogs dinner.
Showed the Mrs photos of the D5 and she agrees it will be hard to replace the D4 with one on looks alone. That creates a dilemma as the Q5 looks strange too, the X5 is too small.....strange I may be taking a trip to a garage selling Swedish things.......2014MY Discovery

Yes I quite like the look of the 'Velar' .... maybe an option for the future if they stick a Hybrid or some such in it......(and take the Range Rover badges off it - just encourages yob jealousy/damage!)... would probably suit me better size wise than what looks like an enormous Discovery 5.... mine is big enough already through the tight muddy roads of Cornwall..... 2016MY Discovery HSE - Black

I would have to agree the Velar is far better looking and for me makes the Discovery 5 look even worse Andy

Velar is not an off road vehicle. D5 is.
