My First Flat Bed Experience

So Mrs W was driving the D3 this afternoon, filled up with Diesel and drove the 1km home from the servo with no issues. Was home for 1.5hrs and hopped back in the car. She said it took a bit to kick over but then got going, although didn't quite feel right. She said it seemed a bit sluggish.

Then at the lights she went to go and there was no go. Engine revved but no forward motion and the dash lit-up, suspension lowered. Reverse was the only movement so she backed off the road. After turning it off and then back on she managed to limp home. I just came home and went to see what was going on and it won't kick over. Starter motor engages but no kick

Battery warning light is on, and reads 12.43v on my multi-meter.

I was at the dealer just yesterday getting the new key + recode, and my Garmin EcoRoute HD shows no Engine fault codes??

So do you think It's a dirty fuel or some other problem?

England

Sounds more like electrical issue to me. Had a similar thing on the FFRR last year which was a duff alternator. It never gave any warning, not even the charge light.

Update

Pretty dirty at Austral - their service seems to have gone downhill over the last couple of months. Car was towed there on Friday, and I made 3 calls yesterday and still could not speak to anyone who could just tell me when someone would look at the car! Fired off an e-mail last night and finally got a return call this morning.

Service guy tells me they think it's a high pressure fuel pump. Given the pattern of events I'm not convinced.

I'm now very happy I paid for the extended warranty with Allianz.

I'm also test driving a new Prado on Friday - I might yet be adding my name to the "By for Now" thread.

PS
Can't understand how Austral service can be so bad. Had my Mazda SP23 serviced on Friday at Eagers Newstead (part of the same dealer group as Austral) and the service is outstanding - probably what I'd expect from a premium brand. Yet the Prestige brand service is more like what I'd expect out of Mazda.

Welcome to the dead HPFP club. I'm glad you and yours survived the consequences. Whistle

Jonesy did I read something about you having to wait ages to get yours fixed?

...and yes I believe others have been left with a smouldering mess - which, if it wasn't endangering my family, I would take right now. Happily take the insurance and get something else....like an EH holden.

Yes - especially the first time it happened, as it was one of the first two to happen in Australia. The other was in Qld, IIRC. They had no HPFP for the Euro IV motors in Australia and had to ship it over. For the inconvenience, I was given LR spotlights, I mean candles - and installed for free.

The first time this happened, diesel was pouring onto the red hot turbo. Lucky diesel doesn't catch like petrol! The next HPFP change was just a ticking noise - reported during a routine service. The one after that was another flat-bed ride - failing much the same as yours. The dealer then botched the installation of the LPFP, resulting in diesel pouring out the top of the tank and onto the exhaust. After they fixed that, I changed dealers and had no issues since... and has been running fine. Then the latest recall on HPFP - in November last year - so yet another one changed. Rolling Eyes

An Update

OK,

Turns out it was a contaminated fuel issue.....that contamination being a tank full of unleaded petrol Big Cry

Mrs W in her haste put the wrong fuel in, and until I spoke with the dealer yesterday, was blissfully unaware of what had happened. Whistle

So my extended warranty hasn't paid for itself (this time) but my comprehensive insurance sure has Thumbs Up

The preliminary damage is around $11k (or $11,400 US) - Ouch!!

Hi Dan,
Oh well - not a self-destructing HPFP - but same result! New fuel system - injectors and HPFP, etc

Glad it worked out well! Thumbs Up

Cheers,
Rob

I find that damage surprising.

A friend also filled his D3 with unleaded and soon after the engine detected all was not right and shut itself down and would not proceed further. The engine basically protected itself.

The damage was zero - the cost about $1500 to drain the tank and flush the entire fuel system - replacing filters etc.

Hi Garry, yes our disco detected something was wrong too, but then "the driver" (as she will be called for now) kept going and when the car finally stopped, she managed to restart it and drive it some more.

I'll get a list of all the bits supposedly needing replacing, but before they knew it was ULP the dealer had already told me the HPFP was dead so it's definitely more than zero damage.

...and as an update - I won't be buying a new Prado. What a rip-off, a tractor with leather seats for the same money as a 3.0 D4.

The old SWMBO trick. And that half of the species wonder why they get picked on.

I hope you are making her pay for it.

Good luck with it and I hope it does not ending costing as much as you think.

Got my Disco back today, and for interest sake have a list of the parts that required replacing.

HPFP $1340
Low Pressure Pump $1135
6x Injectors $4,315 ($719 each)
O-ring set $119
Tubing kit $167

Just over $7k in parts, and around $4k in labour (removing old parts, fitting new parts, removing and flushing fuel tank + engine re-adaptation)

Many years worth of insurance premiums just paid for themselves......

Has anyone fitted their own after market mis-fueling devices?

Dan - I hope it's not too late... one thing I found in my rounds of repairs... the problem was not finally resolved until they replaced the whole fuel system. I think the logic was... when the HPFP, injectors, et al self-destructed due to no lubrication from diesel, the metal filings were sent back to the fuel tank via the return line.

Maybe I should just shut up and not worry you... Shocked
