My first trial - TYRO - any top tips?
Venturing round a TYRO trail for the first time this weekend in my D4. I think I'm ok with the rules (through the canes and don't stop) but any top tips to give me some confidence?
I'm assuming 1st gear low would be best, for maximum control?MY2012 D4 HSE Nara Bronze with some extra stuff
Try to watch a similar size/weight car do it first and see how it behaves on the terrain ie how much does it slide so you can make allowances. Good luck The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;

Hi,
good luck its great fun.
You only have to watch one cane if you are as close to one as you can be, if its going to fit through it will you don't have to watch the other one
and don't forget its better to stop and may be even recovered than trying to keep going and it all ends up up
are you auto auto low box and let the car sort it out should give confidence a pause in forward motion may just be that "a pause"

Remember with a big vehicle you should get a 'Shunt' don't be ashamed to use it every section!

And, if I remember right, you just have to get one hub through the gate at the end to finish. Deffo ISTR as it was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.
How on earth do you get Deffo in a statement with the red bits in it ?????

Remember when going slowly with an auto you need to anticipate any bumps and give it a bit of throttle as car may pause when the load on the torque converter increases and that will be counted as a "ceased forward motion" ie a stop,

and as mentioned getting one hub through the gate without hitting the canes can be very useful to improving ones score. Depending on the height of the canes, fold in the mirrors.

It’s just reinforcing my uncertainty, it was a long time ago. Deffo on that, early 90s.

You will be amazed by how good a D3/4 is during a Tyro, they have a better turning circle than most 90s. Whilst a shunt is available for cars over 100" you can only use it if you physically can't get round, you can't deliberately fail a gate and use it to improve your line to the next one (different clubs treat this in different ways, ask when there). You may find 2nd is better than first, at least you can change on the go, easier than being in a manual or leave in auto.
If you have a front hub through a gate, but you think you will hit the can if you carry on, then stop and you get the lower points than hitting the can.Joined the BMWX5 45e group

The main thing to remember is
Enjoy it. TYRO’s are non damaging. Don’t sulk if you get beaten by the kids. Age limit is 13 if I remember correctly: more to the point is when they can reach the pedals and see over the dash

Well that was a bit of a disaster. Very muddy site, compounded by rain locally for the last couple of days. Completed one section, with just 1 point, but I think they were being lenient. Obvious immediately that a combination of my lack of talent and tires just not offering any grip, it was going to be a struggle. Walked the second section, or rather I slipped round and up the 2nd section - I knew I wouldn't be getting round without needing a tow. I was 2nd to run - 1st needed a tow out. I just slid down the hill, no grip at all, no control. Decided to abandon the section before I slid into anything damaging. Next guy in a defender got as far as me and then needed towing out.
At which point I decided to abandon the day. I will give it another go when its a bit drier.MY2012 D4 HSE Nara Bronze with some extra stuff

Wise decision, discretion deffo sounds the batter part of valour. You managed to avoid "one last lane section" syndrome.

It is great fun, but you have to pick the site and the club - some make RTV's too challenging and damaging the car is almost inevitable Mark.
