Fitting an aftermarket android GPS unit |
|
Does anyone have any knowledge or experience in relation to connecting one of these units up?

Mine has the amplifier under the drivers seat and removing the existing screen I know I would lose the off road display etc l. Confident with fitting the screen but it’s connectivity into the vehicle that’s probably the problem D3HSE Silver - D3SE Black - D3HSE Black - D4.5 Green Overland

You can get looms to run to under the seat.
You loose steering wheel controls
Eg.

Hi Ambit.
I've removed my stereo and bypassed the amp. I fitted a Pioneer head unit, but the one you posted would work too.
I'll get the details of the loom I used and post. I believe its possible to get steering control too, but I've not got that yet so can't confirm. The item listed in the above link is the one I used to bypass my amp. Discovery 4 GS 2009 Auto Stornoway Grey

I thought that you couldn't do this on the HSE with the upgraded stereo. It was only possible to change things on the Base D3. D4 HSE EU6 (Known as Jeeves)

This is a more expensive way. Probably better for HSE logic 7
Keeping the amp and using rca to optical converter from America.
https://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/topic55450.html
Advantage. May keep more of the speakers working.
Disadvantage. You can’t fade speakers front to rear.

That’s what I thought, I have the Harmon Kardon set up in a HSE and the only thing holding me back is the sound quality through the existing speakers running through the under seat amplifier- also HSE has the additional sub built into lower tailgate panel. Want to keep this all working so the link above with the MOST fibre optic interface does appear the best way to go at the moment. Has anyone used the seat to amp bypass loom as per link above on a HSE? Link again here https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161702961436 D3HSE Silver - D3SE Black - D3HSE Black - D4.5 Green Overland

SPT wrote:Ambit - I previously read that someone here had fitted something similar, and I BELIEVE they had to disconnect the drive under the passenger seat, update the CCF, loop a connection on the rear (possibly optical cable) so it sends the signal back to the stereo. I'm sure someone here will be able to provide a more accurate response.
I also spotted these on Alibaba:
https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/LR3...706f3z63SY
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000065036...web201603_
Which are very similar to:

Which indicates it can be done...
SPT- yes this is an even better option if you are going to upgrade the sat nav which is one of my main reasons for the change, along with better audio connectivity. After clicking through your link I found these are also on Ali express which is really easy to just order one from. I’ve used Ali express before with no problems.

That one on ALiExpress looks tempting.
Would be ideal if someone else got one and reported back how good it is before ordering one.

The HSE has speakers in the rear C panel doesn’t it ?
I don’t think these would work with the amp bypass lead
EDIT : Actually I think they would. Driven from front channel.
Anyone it doesn't matter, as you won't get surround sound with anything but the LR system

I'm not sure if this helps but I have an android tablet in place of my navigation screen and use an external FiiO USB DAC - this is connected to the back of my Stereo using the DAC RCA outputs to the AUX in which I soldered connections direct into the back of the plug.
The little DAC acts as a preamp for the tablet and I can't tell the difference between a lossless or high bit-rate track playing on my tablet to a CD on the head-unit and all speakers and controls work as they should.
EDIT - I had to install an optical loop when I removed the satnav.

Minty do you have a link to the DAC you used. Ive read through a few links about using tablets and I think I would rather use an android gps unit as the tablets take some setting up and editing. D3HSE Silver - D3SE Black - D3HSE Black - D4.5 Green Overland

I used a fiio e10k that I purchased cheap on eBay.
As long as the Android GPS will run in host mode it should work just fine without any need for extra power.
