Fitting D4 leather electric seats to D3 (cloth manual)

Very Happy
Success - I have managed to get my new leather seats of D4 origin and have successfully fitted them to replace my tired cloth manual seats in my Discovery 3 Commercial. I suspect this will also work if using donor RRS seats.

I have been reading many posts on this and taken some time to understand the wiring.

I thought I would build upon information already provided in the forum with some specific pointers to save folks time in the future.

I will add pictures shortly:

First point - You need to reverse the polarity of the main supply from the floor loom on both seats.

A. This is easiest done by disconnecting the loom connecter under both seats and unclipping the black plastic terminal.

B. You then have to use some wire - I used some standard earth cable unsheathed, to push the little red clip forward until it drops out from the back of the connector (where there wires go in!) - keep it safe.

C. From the front of the connector use a very small screwdriver (I used a watchmakers) push the blade of the driver down to unhook the silver terminal clip (this is easiest seen if you use the torch on your iPhone first to see the part that needs lifted up.

D. This releases the wire and pin - which drops out the back.

E Swap the pin connectors over and reassemble.

Second Point - the black socket wire coding.

A. the loom on the D3 is Brown with green trace.
B. the loom on the D4 seat is Brown with purple trace.

Third point - make sure you have a connection - my initial change over of the connectors did not quite make - but move the pins in the plug a little to make the contact.

Fourth point - the passenger seat does not have memory and worked first time (in my initial try I omitted reversing the polarity (above) and got the seat travel in the wrong direction and not tilt - fixed the polarity and all working.

Fifth point - the drivers seat is a memory seat - but you can get it to go as Simoniz previously advised albeit in short bursts - to my mind this is acceptable given you are not about to interfere with the ECU. What you need to do is provide a power supply to the grey socket in the seat loom - this is not in the original floor loom. You will find however a bullet connector set in the floor loom that seems to be spare. (in fact it was previously used to power the heated seats on the cloth seats) The female (blue wire) connector has 12v on ignition key. I cut off the connectors and simply stripped the blue +ve and green -ve wires and inserted them into the floor loom so as to connect to the seat loom when bolted together. It worked.

Sixth point - be very careful when doing all this - I disconnected the positive lead on the battery in the engine bay when doing any work to avoid any upsets. (each time reconnected to test and disconnecting to tinker - don't let that air bag go off!) Also if moving the seat belt restrainer system - make sure you get your orange and blue connectors round the correct way. see the pics or look at the way it is set up in the old seat.

Seventh point - goes without saying - but check all the fuses in the fuse box on the passenger side - mine had all the fuses in place as standard - even though not previously required.

Like all things once you see how it is done - its easy - but when guessing and messing about takes so much time.

Some previous posts had suggested obtaining a LHD passenger seat switch with integral wiring loom as a replacement to the memory issue - that would be my next port if I had not got the memory seat working - I'm not really bothered about three positions memorised.

I hope this helps - but remember this is my experience and I cannot be held accountable if it does not quite work out for you on your vehicle.

Great advice and much appreciated. Even worked for my 2005 LHD.

Couldn't find an additional 12V supply so I used the main power supply from the loom (the 2 wires you need to swap)

Hi!

Could you please post some pictures of your new seats in the D3?

And do anyone know if its possible to swap the memory panel to the passenger seat? Would like to buy seats from UK for my D3, but here in Norway we have LHD vehicles.

Is it possible to convert RHD seats to LHD ones?

How easy will it be for early D3 SE drivers power seat heated to be replaced with the D4 drivers power seat heated? Will it be plug and play then? or do I need to deal with wires also?

I’m just on with doing this conversion with a d4 commercial electric seat. Managed to get the seat moving back and forth but can’t get the lumbar movement. Anyone any ideas? Thanks.

Easiest to convert the drivers seat to a passenger seat. Change the switch panel and rewire it.
