Fitting fixed tow bar to chassis

So, tried to fit fixed tow bar but having sourced the appropriate bolts and nuts when doing them up on chassis they became tight but there is a gap on the strutt side so will need a spacer . Has anyone experienced this ???

I take it you have fitted spacers in the chassis or am I reading it wrong?

Yes, the spacer that goes into the chassis through outer side then the bolt that goes into it through the hole in chassis , but it gets very tight quickly and is a good 2 cm from tightening up fully.

Did you fit the large washer over chassis hole?

2cm seems a lot certain there was not that amount of space when I put spacers into chassis. I did post the sizes on another post maybe check if yours are similar. Are the nuts nylock ones?

Haven't any washers! that might be the problem . the spacers came when we bought the original kit and have sat around the garage whilst tow bar was fitted to Disco 3 . On getting Disco 4 , remembered we had them but had to source bolts to go in the ends from our dealer. Wondering whether to get them to look at it , my patience is run out. Should have been such a simple job. Having removed from Disco 3 just had to put it on 4 but oh no they had to change it!! will research the washers ,

Many thanks.

Is it just lack of thread on the bolts,I have just removed the fixed towbar from mine and could measure them if that would help. Smile

No it's too much thread on bolt , just wondering if I'm being pathetic and not strong enough to keep tightening but don't want to force them . The depth inside the spacer looks as though it should be long enough to take bolt but just gets so tight. Would say they are 3cm length threads so are only going in 1 cm ish.

On the disco3 towbar I fitted to my brother in laws car it just had short bolts that threaded direct into captive nuts in the chassis on the disco4 a longer bolt goes straight through the spacer in the chassis with a nut on the other side so if this is what you have and the nut will not tighten either the threads are not compatible or you need an extra shredded wheat for breakfast! 2cm is a hell of a gap. On my D4 the long bolt goes through the chassis from the outside, through the spacer inside the chassis rail, then the long bar part of the bracket, then a washer and a nut - all very straightforward and tightened up with no issues

Thanks for help, I do think it may be that I need the weetabix but unfortunately I'm coeliac so no wheat!!!
I have found some funny washers in the mixed tin of nuts bolts etc that the spacers were stored in when not needed for Disco 3, think I will get good old Mike at Town and Country to have a look.

89mm long 25.5mm OD and 17mm ID this is on a Witter Bar Bolt length 130mm 8.8 strength I think it is. Hope this helps people or try Watling Engineering In Radlett they make from mounted bars. Check your bolts and spacers with these dimensions first mate Thumbs Up
