Fitting a LR original screen/sat nav dvd player |
|
Hey all,
suspect there is an FAQ/guide somewhere, but I've inherited all the bits (I hope!) for an original LR sat nav, to be fitted to my D3. Can anyone point me at any useful guides etc?
Cheers! Disco3 for the road; Series 3 Lightweight for the mud; Guinness for afters.

What bits have you got hold of then? Can you make a quick list?
Just to cheer you up, there is no FAQ/tutorial/guide because what you are proposing has never ever been done to my knowledge even though quite a lot of people have thought about it....as Wiggs has mentioned it certainly isn't a case of just connecting up the wires.... 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

just do give you an example of how difficult it must be....
on a german forum a member ordered a RRS with premium audio and due to some mixup received high audio instead. He only found out a week after taking over the car and then insisted to get what he ordered (BTW he had an rear diff lock that he did not order build in ). It ended in a swap of the car to a simular car on stock (brand new !!!) which was the cheaper option for the dealer than retro fitting the missing parts.
Estimate for parts and work was 16000 EUR (yes 16K) - the loss for swapping a week old car into a new one was around 10000 EUR - so he got a new car....

BTW - Aftermarket audio and video works fine with a break in box to the MOST ring. (my gallery)

cannot be done I'm afraid
Even if you get/got all the bits you would still need activation code from lr engineering which is never going to happen TLO has left the building.......

I thought BBS spy was working on that to get it running but I'm not sure. It was mentioned in a topic but can't find it on the moment. Or was he just adding thing to the screens? Roel

Yes he can activate it by changing the car configuration file .. Something Lr won't /can't do.
However it's going to work out a very very expensive project if you have to buy one of Colin's special boxes aswell as all the other stuff G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

Yes you are right, It will become expensive but then Colin's box can be used for other things too.
Little off Topic, Do you have a fault code reader that reads the whole D3 system? Roel

Did someone mention my name?
The "BOX" does admittedly cost a bit to produce which really cannot be avoided.
I promise i have really done the best i can on the price of it
But come on, after all 149 Euro for a 300Mhz Pentium class PC in a box the size of a ciggy packet is hardly a rip off. And even adding the price of vehicle communication interfaces and software licensing on top does not drive it into silly money considering what can be saved by being self reliant rather than at the mercy of a dealer.
At the risk of sounding a bit commercial, please note the new "site sponsor" designation on the left Roel" i should explain what benefits this extra "BOX" cost gives.
Many systems use the processing power of the PC itself to run the software that communicates with the vehicle. In many case that's, fine but with all the differing PC speeds, O/S's, other loaded software sharing the same CPU, that can produce erratic and unreliable communications. Don't even mention the rubbish security of windows aspect
Our way round all of this was to create a "BOX that sits between the PC and the vehicle which is actually a PC itself that actually does all the important timing related vehicle system communications, returning its data to the PC in an easy to work with format.
We call this "BOX" a vehicle server, because it acts just like a web server.
Imagine, you open a web browser like internet explorer, and click on a link that gives you a HTML page showing the current temperature, wind speed, and snow fall in Alaska or another that give the latest news report from CNN.
With our "BOX" connected to your vehicle instead, That's now no different that clicking on the links provided in our free Vehicle explorer software, that gives you a HTML page with the current temperature, fuel usage and road speed, plus a loads of other information, or a link that reports the stored fault code meanings of all 30 or so systems in any D3.
So we really do feel that our "BOX" is a worthwhile element to our systems even if it does cost 149 Euro.
But that still a lump of investment to overcome, so as Roel intelligently figures, my intent is to make it do enough to justify (or more than) its initial outlay cost.
here's the latest
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic31544.html?highlight=
looking at Roels avatar, he could do with the extra inches
Anyway, sorry if i seemed to hijack this post, god knows we see enough person to person banter ruining or mis directing threads.
I have a base D3 and all the ECU's that would be required to update the audio to high line.
However i uncovered a few factors not previously pointed out that really made it a monumental challenge.
The 6 CD head unit also uses Antennae diversity, which has different Antennae etched into the glass of the rear and 2 side windows, so those would need to be cut out and replaced, it also has more speakers requiring the 4 door harnesses to be replaced along with the door cards and speakers, main loom, dash loom side looms, roof loom and rear tailgate loom. Of course the rear compartment side trims need to be replaced with those that have the sub woofer, and when changing the main loom to one that supports the high line Audio you will need to change the seats to be electric along with the electric memory door mirrors.
I did not really go beyond this but am sure there is lots i did not uncover.
but i think you might see why no one ever did this before.
PS how much do you want for your 6CD changer head unit, might come in handy for our development work
warmest regards

Cheers all... the phrase I'm after rhymes with rowlocks I believe. Still, nil desperandum. Wouldn't own two Landys if I wanted to do things the easy way. (Got a new engine to go in the Lightweight tomorrow after some over-exuberance at Kirton last month )
On that note, has anyone ever successfuly modded the screen to be used with other devices?
