If the LED dies you will never know anyway. The whole purpose of the resistor is to fool the electronics into thinking there is a bulb there. So you have to do a visual check. The car won't help you if an LED dies.

What is the likelihood of all led's failing within a multi-led lamp?
I have no resistors fitted just now, and I have the multi-led hids4u replacement lamps up front (following detango), I have multi-led side repeaters, and d4 rears.Colin

As this post was immediately after mine I assume it was that which you were answering.
In my post I stated that if a FRONT indicator bulb had blown (assuming it were a standard bulb - as this thread is about LED REAR lights.)
So to clarify, with not having resistors fitted to LED rear lights you wouldn't know if a front non led bulb had blown.I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

Yep I agree with you. With LED back lights with no resistor and normal front indicator bulbs, you would never know if a front bulb went.

I think the chances of an LED failure is small. LED's seem to be rated for about 5 years continuous use, so an indicator should last virtually forever in a car. Even sidelights/rear lights aren't on all the time and should last ages. However you can't just connect an LED to a car battery. It needs some kind of current limiter that might be something as simple as a resistor internal to the bulb (not the ones fitted to fool the car electronics into thinking it has an incandescent bulb fitted) or possibly something a bit more complicated. So if the current limiter were to fail, then the whole thing would go off regardless of the number of LED's (unless they had individual current limiters fitted for each LED).
I have had cheapo chinese multi LED bulbs fail. They would flash at a high frequency when switched on. I've got the hids4u multi LED orange indicators in the front. I'm sure that thay will be far more reliable. They are also very bright!

Although Narpy kindly did mine and I chose to have them on the body rather than the unit themselves .....
D4 Front upgrade/cut back wings n things 'taking a long time but getting there'.
D4 rear upgrade - Narpys helped with that bit

You all are funny.. you can make resistors for $5 from any electronics store.. give yourself a + and - lead.. heatshrink the entire thing.
I just used inline splice connectors.. slide them around the neg and turn signal wires of the harness, squeeze shut and slide lock around the top and you're good to go.
I did this on my RRS and it worked fine for 3 years before I sold it.. just did the same on my LR3 and it's perfect.
FWIW the 2014 "blackout" edition LR4 tail lights are a little more $$ but look SWEET on black and white LR3s.

If what you describe is what I think you're describing, it is known on this side of the Atlantic as a Scotch Lock and anybody who prefers those over direct soldering, deserves everything that will eventually go wrong.

What omh and wattage resistors are required for rear LED lights from d4? Some sell 5w, some 25w, and different omhs as well

There is a video on the Britpart Youtube channel how to fit them.
I haven't bothered and have gone through around a dozen MOTs on 3 Different D3s with the faster blinking noise.Must stop buying shiny toys....

I know how to fit them, but what is the math around resistor calcs? Different places sell different resistors for Discovery.
