Fitting a roof tent ?

Has anyone fitted a roof tent? I have a Hannibal roof tent and I am wanting to fit it to my D3 and I was just wondering what other people have done.
The options I have come up with is roof bars or roof rack.
Any advice/ help would be appreciated, and has anyone got any pictures of a roof tent fitted.

Hi Stevie

I have a Hannibal mounted on 2 Rhino Rack roof bars. It works perfectly. Opening to the rear we put in a couple of 10mm spacers so that the tailgate opened without touching the closed tent. When open the tailgate handle just touches the floor of the tent so we put a piece of cloth on it though we have some shorter gas struts on order.

Spent a week camping in it at Xmas time and it was fantastic. Are you getting air suspension? It really makes it so much easier to use being able to drop the car to access mode.

Thanks for the reply, looks like you have what I am wanting to achieve. I have the air suspention. I been looking at the rhino racks, do you recomend those? I see you can have 3 bars and then that makes it easier to mount an awning. I was thinking of mounting the tent at the front of the roof and then opening towards the back of the car, then using a access ladder on the back door. Loads of options to think about Rolling Eyes

Just looking at your pictures, I have not done any measurements but it looks like my idea may not work. Due to tent being to long.

Yes Stevie I can recommend the Rhino Racks...I also had them on my Defender, very well engineered and there are lots of brackets and bits they make to help you mount bits.

3 bars is the way to go as the awning mounts perfectly that way. I am not sure how you would go mounting the tent further towards the front...we have walls we can fit if the weather is bad which would not work if further fwd. Where it is keeps the rain off nicely and gives plenty of privacy with the extended fly which I can totally recommend. It transforms the tent totally and only takes a couple of minutes extra to put up.

We have a twin draw system by Black Widow with a fridge slide for the 39lt Engel and a cargo barrier. One draw is dedicated to recovery gear and the other a camp stove, billy and other bits.

And with the awning out.
