Floaty steering - knackered ball joints
Hi Guys,
Had the beast into my local indy yesterday after having experienced the floaty steering sensations and then followed up by the suspension failure indicators. Turns out the bottom ball joints are (very) badly worn (only just passed it's MOT last week prior to my picking it up ) as are the steering rack spindles .
Mech thinks excessive vibration may have 'upset' the wheel sensor hence the failure indicator as nothing is showing on DTC diags.
So, I guess it's back to the dealer later this morning to see what he has to say - my mech says it should not have passed it's MOT - I'm happy (at the moment) to give the dealer the benefit of the doubt but that may change depending on his response.
Just so as I can be prepared, does anybody know how much it is likley to cost for work to replace both ball joints and the spindles ?
If I was you I would ask for complete new lower wishbones, which will then save you having to replace the bushes sooner or later. If the ball joints have worn then the bushes may be too.Previously:

Hi Duncan. The bushes are shot on mine so was thinking of getting the full wishbones renewed, but the local independent said it was 4 hrs labour for each side, which would make it quite an expensive job. Do you know if this a job that could be done at any garage (with lower labour rates) and then taken to the indy to get the 4 wheel align done?

i took the D3 down to the indi yesterday and we replicated the problem on the ramp.
he said it would take half a day total .. to do both sides. so about 3 to 4 hours maxDuncan

when you get new arms, make sure you get that new bolt as it will be cut off to keep the labour time down Bodsys Brake Bible

Likewise, I spoke to my local indi this morning and he reckons he can do all 4 on mine (front lowers and rear upper) in less than a day. By the look on his face when I told him what I wanted doing, it obviously isn't a job he particularly enjoys!Previously:

Just had mine done a couple of weeks ago, both front lower arms, primarily because the bushes were shot, looking at the old ones afterwards, the ball joints were pretty sloppy too.
Local indy charged me for 3 hours plus parts - £472 all in - I'm happy with that Clive

Cheers for the info. Just been told by a local garage 4hrs labour for the lot. Just need to order some wishbones now, get the servo recall done, serviced and then i think I will have to say bye bye D3
