Fluctuating revs - what to check? |
|
Hi All
So was sat stationary today in park and the revs were fluctuating slightly. This was obvious on the rev counter and I could hear it as well.
Any easy things to check? I have an iid tool but not sure what to look at or what the readings should be if I could find anything.
Incase it adds to the thoughts I often get hesitation when putting my foot down / kick down and a rather attractive black cloud out the back. I have put 3 lots of Diesel engine cleaner in over the months which gave a short change in the smoke output but it then came back with a vengeance. I have had a look at the hoses but can’t see any splits - main one is a silicon hose
The car has the EGR’s removed and I believe a map many years ago.
Oooh it’s an auto and has 287k on the clock.
I did grab a quick video of the rev counter incase it helps

Any thoughts really appreciated
Baz

Has the gearbox torque convertor ever been changed. I would suspect that

Ah no it hasn’t and does need doing, I didn’t realise that may be an issue in park.
Will make some calls about getting that done
Thank you

Doesn't fit with the symptoms - I've never known a transmission fluid issue cause overfuelling.
Firstly, a induction smoke test should be carried out to rule out induction leaks, then a check of injector trim values & leakback test - I'm assuming you've cleaned the MAP ?
Friction modifiers in transmissions only mask any issues, they don't cure them, in any case, torque converter issues are not 'fixed' by the addition of friction modifiers, only worn clutch packs will temporarily benefit from that.

Try checking for a failed engine oil temp sensor. They fail to something like -30C. Makes idle erratic. OK when driving above say 1800 rpm. Series one 1949 - in bits, chassis is strapped to the ceiling in my garage (beside the canoe)
LR 90 - In bits
Disco 3 - currently in bits

Hi
Thanks all for the additional info
Jobs list -
Check oil temp reading
Clean map
Find somebody to do smoke test
I assume the leak back values etc are physical tests not through iid?
Thanks again all really appreciate it
