All fluids changed or not? |
|
Looking on the Maintenance Sheets supplied in the sticky post the gearbox box oil and filter should be renewed at 150K miles and transfer box oil renewed every 75K.
Having looked at my owners handbook it states main gearbox and transfer box are filled for life and therefore doesn't provide a specification for the lubricant in each. I am assuming that the Maintenance Sheets are an update to the 2005 owners handbook info.
Does anyone know what oils should be used in each?
As mine is up for the big 105K mile service I was thinking of getting all the fluids replaced including gearbox. Is it worth doing now?
Cheers,
John

I'm afraid I don't know the specs you're looking for QJ, but I agree with you that all fluids should be changed regularly. There's no benefit I'm aware of from having metal filings scouring the internals.
IMHO when a service sheet says "filled for life" what it really means is "filled for life of the warranty".
My several Volvo's used to bang on about never replacing fluids. Auto box and steering rack both felt that they were on the way out by 175,000 miles on my first 740, so I thought why not. Flushed and changed the fluids and it was like new components had been fitted, cost was under £50. There's no way I'd risk the seals leaking by leaving it that long again. Having said that finding the Mobil spec oil for my V40 auto box continues to be a nightmare; I was quoted £50 per litre from Volvo (need minimum 12 litres to include flush procedure) and they can swivel for that much. Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?

did a bit of pre-emptive ringing around regards the shell gearbox fluid as we are going to have ours flushed next week (approx 11 litres), long and short, shell confirm that it is only sold as a 209 litre drum, apart from LR!!
The rating of the gearbox fluid ( Shell ATF M -1375.4) is 26.8 centi stokes
The rating of the transfer box fluid (TF0753) is 32 centi stokes at 40 degree
Castrol do an alternative to Shell with the same visco values it would appear at approx £10 per litre as oppose to TLO who can only supply at aorund £18 inc vat according to our man at Bristol Transmissions where its going.
