Focusing Xenon headlights

I think my right headlight is out of focus after replacement. Any hints on focusing Xenon headlights please.

I stand to be corrected but if you replaced with like-for-like bulb and it's seated properly it would be right. can they actually be focussed ?

Dark nigh, 20 feet from a wall with the car on the level and adjust the new one to match the same beam height as the old one.

but that's alignment, not focus.

if it IS alignment that was intended, check the headlamp unit is sat properly in all 4 retaining points. easy to have it sat in front of one of them in my experience.

Have you caught the lever for setting the bulb to EU? It's right next to the headlight bulb and would give you a different beam pattern if you've knocked it?

Sorry just noticed your location.. Not sure if you still have the lever?I would guess that Oz vehicles are just fitted with UK headlights from the factory?

I read it as alingment, i would say if foucs is out then its a dicky or badly fitted bulb which is doubtful.

Im always adjusting headlights at work, and always use the trusty wall method, never had any issues or more importantly mot fails.

Thanks, I had a broken right side (for RHD) Xenon replaced and now looks a bit higher and more left than before. Can you please eleborate on these "retaining points" and how to access them. (Nothing to do with driving on the right thank goodness.)

sorry if any of this is patronising …

open bonnet

looking at the top of the headlamp, there are two metal tabs which you pull to release the headlamp … one at either side of the unit.

each has two keyhole slots … one near top, one near the bottom.

sounds to me like the lower rhs one (lhs as you're facing it) hasn't gone back far enough when it was refitted and is holding that corner forward of the bit it should lock on to.

lift the tab on that side - a ty-wrap is handy for that - it should come up about an inch.

press the bottom corner back and if I'm right it will go back about 1/4 of an inch.

push the tab back down whilst keeping pressure on that corner.

too new for me !

surprised if they've changed that much though … perhaps someone with a late model D4 will answer ? wouldn't like to get you dismantling the grille for no reason

What does handbook say ? realise it may say "dealer only" for Xenon but surely tells you how to change "lesser" bulbs.

oops ! had a look at mine today and even on 2011 the inner tab is just under the grille.

so … if you've not done it before:

press the 4 retaining bits at the top of the grille and ease top forward a little.

the bottom is a bit trickier (or I find it so).

you CAN simply pull gently but it tends to release with a jerk and I've scratched bumper previously. So I use a massive flat-blade screwdriver and aim down in the bottom corner. a gentle twist brings it off without the sudden jerk Very Happy

you'll then see the other tabs.
