folding mirrors in the snow

Have just taken the D4 to the alpes - works a treat on winter tyres etc. The one shortcoming is these bloody mirrors. I locked the car and the mirrors folded as usual and I thought nothing of it. When I went back to it a week later and after a foot or so of snow I discovered solid ice on the arm where the mirror folds. This ice prevented them opening to the normal position. I had to spend some time chipping off the ice so the mirrors could return to the open position.

Is there any way to disable the fold so that a) I don't have to spend 15mins chipping away ice b) so there is no danger of the fuses blowing or mirror motors burning out.

It has always stuck me that the mirror fold was a superfluous function in many cases (although useful to see the car is lokked after the school run).

Dealer job according to p48 of the manual.... I just happened to be looking for the dipping function when reversing 'cos that's a pain too.

Engage reverse and adjust the mirror to the position you would like it to move to when reverse is engaged - not sure if you need to save the setting (probably do)

It is a dealer change option, or faultmate thingy if your lucky enough to have one.

Slight help I discovered by accident is if you hit lock then unlock in quick succession on the fob the doors unlock and mirrors stay folded.

I sometimes do this if just throwing something in the car so guess you could use when iced up, carry a bottle of de icer spray to soak them free. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I have had the same problem, it drives me nuts, but if I think snow/frost is going to be a problem after I lock the car I just pull the mirrors out to their normal position. When I return to the car and unlock it the motors do their thing and clip back in to place. A bit of a faff but better than ruined motors or cracked paint!

Always open to better suggestions though
