Frank Pickles - Breakdown recovery?
Hi All,
I've been looking at breakdown cover for the car and van in uk/europe and was almost settled on ADAC, but then Frank Pickles came up with a decent quote.
Has anybody had experience using this service with them? Apparently they use a recovery company called Alps in the UK..

Where many breakdown policies will recover a towed trailer when the car breaks down, they don't all recover a broken down trailer.
Take care if its the caravan breakdown you are looking for as well as the car.

And bear in mind that policies that cover the van often only cover it while attached to the car, breakdown while out for the day and you could have a problem.==================================

check caravan length recover as well, as most have a lenth limit which is less than most of the UK twin axles. I think only the Greenflag cover via the caravan club covers these, but they dont do european cover.

Caravan and Camping club Arrival with the RAC, no size limits, will take you back to site to finish your holiday before recovery home and will take van to storage and car to home or garage.==================================

I have Green flag cover which covers Europe for repatriation for car and van, I'm not sure it covers the van if the van breaks down though. FFRR 2017 4.4SDV8 Autobiography. Cost so much I must be mad!

It covers the caravan as well as the car - think it was suggested only after I'd renewed my van insurance through them.
Here is a summery of the cover:
Looks like its facilitated by Alp Recovery (alpltd.co.uk) so I'll do some digging on it.
ADAC is a bit more expensive but that covers multiple people instead of just the car and van in this case.

But does it recover a broken down caravan or just the broken down car with caravan attached?

You should also check the weight that they Will recovery. The AA will not recovery a combined weight of over 3500kg. Green Flag will cover over 3500kg.
D3 and a TA caravan will be around 4400kg 4750kg.Andy.

Yes I know what you meen, but I read it to say that the total outfit has to be less that 3500kg. See below.
Either way I have Green Flag as they have no size or weight restrictions.
Interested in others take on this.
Vehicle specifications
Breakdown assistance is only available for cars, motorhomes, vans, minibuses or motorcycles (including quads and trikes) which meet the specifications set out below.
Please note that “car, van, minibus or motorcycle” does not include, amongst other things, electric pavement vehicles, electrical wheelchairs, bicycles (including electric bicycles), any vehicle which cannot lawfully be used on the public highway and/or any non-motorised vehicle.
Maximum Vehicle Weight: 3.5 tonnes (3,500kg) gross vehicle weight
Maximum Vehicle Width: 7ft 6in (2.3m) which constitutes the overall width of the vehicle bodywork excluding mirrors, measured at the widest points.
Assistance will also be provided for a caravan or trailer which was on tow at the time of the breakdown, provided that it falls within the above limits.
For the avoidance of doubt, we do cover electric cars, vans, minibuses and motorcycles.
Additional vehicle specifications/restrictions applying to Vehicle Cover only
In addition to the general vehicle specifications set out above, the following terms apply to Vehicle Cover (Please note: these are not applicable to Personal Cover):
a) AA breakdown assistance is only available under Vehicle Cover for a vehicle which has been
registered with the AA at the time assistance is requested; and
b) Must be a UK Vehicle which is registered with the DVLA; and
c) It is possible to change the vehicle registered under Vehicle Cover during the membership
Year. Please note however that service will not be available for the new vehicle until 24 hours after the AA receives notification of the vehicle change. In addition the AA reserves the right not to re-register any vehicle which has been previously registered during the same membership Year. The AA are unable to complete more than 3 vehicle changes requested within the membership Year.Andy.

We are with the AA, but are changing to the C&CC Arrival with the RAC, because most standard services will only recover the caravan or trailer if its attached to the car at the time of breakdown, both the C&CC and Caravan Club's offering offer so much more than standard:
Special benefits for caravans, trailer tents and trailers include:
Caravan breakdown recovery on any UK campsite.
Cover for large units over 7.6 metres (25ft) in length or 2.3 metres (7 ft 6 in) in width.
If your caravan cannot be towed and requires recovery on a flatbed truck, RAC will recover it at no
additional charge*.
Arrival Return so if you suffer a car or caravan breakdown on the way to a campsite and RAC can’t repair you at the roadside or at a local garage within a reasonable amount of time, they will take you, your car and caravan to the site and back home again*
Follow on Recovery, so we can take your caravan to a second location of your choice (within a 75-mile radius)*
A Re-Unite service so if you are away from your campsite when your car breaks down, RAC will take you back to the site within a 75-mile radius to collect your caravan before getting you home*.
Optional European caravan breakdown cover with no supplements (for cars or caravans)
Personal breakdown cover, so you will be covered as a driver or passenger in any vehicle, whether you are towing or not.==================================

Just priced up RAC via CCC membership and it's nearly 300 notes!
Frank Pickles via ALPS covers the van if attached to the car but not otherwise. It's a new van though so breakdown very unlikely.
Think I may go ADAC as that covers multiple people.
