Re: Getting Diff out

Thanks for information so far. I've managed to get offside shaft out but still struggling with short one. You mention a 'C' ring. Where exactly is that? I can't see anything that looks like a C ring at the diff end?
However I reckon I can drop the diff without taking shaft out first.
My latest problem now is that the bolt holding the diff at the front is simply spinning in situ and I can't get it out!

I find the short shaft can be drifted out with a blunt metal rod and hammer

And you need a slim 21mm (IIRC) spanner to get down into the "captive" nut

Thumbs Up

Spent a sunny afternoon taking my spare front diff apart that I got from someone on here a while ago.

Nothing really bad in terms of no real pitting, just general discolouration and wear on all the bearings. Decided that I may as well do the pinion bearing too. Man that was a real tough cookie! But anyway, all part and cleaned up, just need to put the bearings and seals back in.

I already had the two output shaft bearings, but I didn't think I'd be doing the main one. Does anyone know the timken part for it?

OK, so Timken part numbers for the Pinion bearings are:-

NP310800/NP312191

and

NP159221/NP254157

Just ordered some from http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/index.php

Front diff bearings

I am slightly confused by all the references and part no.s for bearings for the front diff (D3)- pinion vs pinion side etc etc so hoping for clarification.

I am assuming that the NP310800 and NP159221 are for the pinion input (prop shaft in) and the bearings for the output shafts are LHS LM603049 as per Nodge and the output shaft RHS is 32010X as per Mikeys post. Living relatively remote and having to order stuff from down south, getting it right the first time is a key aim. Thanks for the awesome info and insights. Cheers.

Bodsy I posted it on the Fb forum, just found it again its Torrington b-268I think they are about £10. Cheaper than a tube but a bit of a swine to get out. I used some threaded rod with a nut on it.

Front diff mount

Hi All,

At long last I'm replacing my front diff. However I'm stuck! How do you get the nut back onto front mount bolt? The rest of job went well. I'm hoping the nut didn't have to be in place before diff was installed. That would be annoying.

Any help appreciated.

Raymond

Tried to get it myself, but no luck. Found a discussion about it somewhere, and someone doing this job was making it themself.

Pretty much the route I have gone down, spoke to a gearbox guru and he told
Me just to put a .50/.75mm shim before the collapsible spacer and just collapse it a little more.
As it only sets the bearing preload and has no effect on the backlash.
Let you know how I get on once I’ve done a few miles

Doing my diff at the moment and plan to use the “0.50/0.75mm shim before the collapsible spacer” to restore the pinion preload. Can anyone tell me the torque for the pinion nut? Many thanks.
