Front Runner Expedition rack
Had the Front Runner Rack fitted this week. Excellant piece of Kit, but Bl**dy noisy. In fact its so noisy I will be removing it this weekend unless I can do something to quiten it down. I expected there would be slightly more noise but not this much
Does any one have any tips to quieten it, or is that as good as it gets ??
Also, how long should it take to remove and refit when I need to.
CheersDuncan

Does your rack have wind deflectors fitted to the front underside like this.
BTW The Land Rover Rack makes more noise. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Hi Andrew,
yes it does. It is OK upto about 40mph then it get noisier, which is bearable. But at 60 it starts whistling, about 65 the whistling stops and the whoshing just gets loader. At 85ish its almost unbearable - so on goes the radio (Very load !!). 100 miles later Ive then got a headache cos the radio is too load !
I have a sun roof and all the noise is coming through that, so that may be the problem. Perhaps thats one of the downside of having a sunroof !!Duncan

get some sound insulation material and cut it the same shape as the sun roof. Place it underneath the glass and close the sliding curtain thing which should keep it in place. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

It shouldn't do that.... both AndrewS & I have sunroofs and the noise (on mine) isn't as noticable as you say... are there two deflector plates fitted? and are all the 'legs' on their shortest extension?
Mine was pretty noisy over 70; loud over 80. I had the twin deflectors like on Andrew's and all bolts were spanner-tight. I had planned to try adjusting the height of the legs to see whether that would change it, but sold it last month to Chris Tyler.
Fitting and removal is a two (tall) person operation and it helps to have a couple of small ratchet-type spanners so that both of you can attend to the bolts. The fit and adjustment of the legs in the track is a bit of a pain. FWIW, I think it must have taken Chris and I a good hour and a half to swap his rails and my FR rack and rail set, but then it was dark and cold at the time.Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

I have both the FR and the LR rack, and the FR rack is definitely noisier. That said, I agree with 10FC in that its not noisy enough to cause distress.
You need to check that the wind deflectors are bolted on properly, and that the front/leading edges are riveted in.
What are you doing driving at 85 anyway? Don't you have rabid speedcops and millions of cameras like we do?

i think the wind deflector might resonate if it is not firmly fixed. if anyone comes up with a plan to make the rack quiet please post it.
