Front speaker upgrade

Hi all!

Here's what's going on in Finland Smile

I'm installing Hybrid Audio L1 Pro tweeters and L6 midbasses. They look like this:

As the tweeters are a whole lot bigger than what is possible to fit in the stock locations, some modifications are necessary. This way I'll also avoid having two grilles (the LR grill is far from ideal acoustically)

Directly aimed at the driver's ear. The modifications will not interfere with side airbags (which will hopefully never be used)

Driver's side.

MDF trim ring and some hot glue to keep them in right position, ready to be fiberglassed.

The next pictures will be of the finished product Smile

I cut into the back of the tweeter grill pastic welded and black cauled the tweeter into place. A lot neater. Thumbs Up

is this in combination with the Harman Kardon amplifier or do you plan an upgrade with a discrete amp for the front system based on the high power output of the HK...

CaverD3: neater, maybe - better sounding, hardly Wink The L1 Pro is simply too big to be mounted in the stock locations. And the double grilles really do disrupt higher frequencies a lot.

Amplification is under development at the moment. I'm a car audio distributor by profession, but as I'm currently between higher end amplifier brands, I'll probably use my old McIntosh MC425 as a temporary solution.

My setup will be very simple, a two way active front stage and a subwoofer in the back. So, that's five or six channels of amps, a 3-way DSP (Alpine PXA-H100) and a 2-DIN CD/DVD/tuner/navi (Alpine IVA W505R) complimented with an 8.5" roof monitor. The latter three are already installed. The sub will probably be Hybrid Audio L8 in the already existing 30-liter closed enclosure (even though the L8 is primarily intended for freeair installation)

Next week I'll have the new tweeter locations upholstered in black vinyl. Hopefully it can be done without seams - they wouldn't blend in with the rest of the interior. The backup plan is to use a rubber-like sprayable paint. Let's see.

Sound should be pretty good from those, let's reserve judgement on the final look til it's finished. Thumbs Up

Looks like a base audio unit, not the Logic setup, so I'm guessing anything would be better Wink

Yes, base unit originally.

My previous setup was all Genesis, but since our cooperation ended, I had to look for something else. Hybrid Audio Technologies is a very small US-based speker manufacturer, but their products are top of the line (yet affordable). In fact, last year HAT equipped cars won more IASCA (Intl AutoSound Comp Asso) world championship titles than all other front stage speaker manufacturers combined. So, I'm indeed expecting the result be better than original LR Very Happy Very Happy

You can get vinyl plastic in spay cans. Idea

Was the body too big to fit behind the tweeter space (length wise)?

Yes, vinyl spray is plan B. I'd like to keep the surface pattern as close to the original (in dashborad) as possible, that's why I'll try with "real" vinyl first.

The L1 Pro body is both too wide and long. It might have been possible to fit most of it inside the original plastic, but in that case they would have been off axis. Now both the left and right channels point diretctly to the drivers's ears.

No 4x4 screens here Rolling Eyes

Not quite finished yet, but here we go:

And here's where the mounting baffle for L6 will be fixed. Just to ease out Phase III, we made these big enough for the 8" bass/subwoofer L8 Rolling Eyes
